About

About The Wine

These awesome Snowflake wines are sort of a 'one and done' kind of deal from winemaker Dave Mackintosh.

Each year Dave isolates a special parcel of fruit which he makes into a stand alone cuveé. The wines are only released once. No two are alike. Just like a snowflake.

This year's is a real banger. It's six rows of Savagnin from the rising Vineyard which was planted many moons ago, back when they thought it was albarino!

Dave describes it as "One of those fuck ups that turn good." Savagnin being perhaps a more interesting variety for him to play around with.

It's a savoury, scrumptuous wine that we highly recommend pairing with a wedge of comte, or something equally as wicked.

About Arfion

New Zealand born Dave "Bro" Mackintosh is the head man at Arfion.

After cutting his teeth at Oyster Bay, Dave settled in Victoria's Yarra Valley and after working with Steve Flamsteed at Giant Steps, began his own brand Arfion: which means 'Our Wine' in Scottish Gaelic.

Dave is all about letting the fruit do the talking, guiding rather than forcing, constantly searching for the simplest way to get young, energetic wines into the bottle for people to enjoy.

His Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio are all effortless examples of wines made with a ‘less is more’ mentality. By working with some of the best growers in the Yarra Valley, Dave has put together a gorgeous range of wines that have interest and drinkability in spades.

From The Producer

Snowflake is produced in small amounts every year from an excellent parcel of fruit that we believe can make something really special.

Luckily for us, in 2018, a tiny 6 row block of Savagnin became available from the Rising Vineyard near St Andrew’s in the Yarra Valley. Originally planted by Neil Roberts around 2000, as a trial block, on the understanding it was Albarino. Turned out it wasn’t. One of those fuck ups that turn good.

The fruit was destemmed and spent a night on skins before being pressed directly to old puncheons on full solids. Natural ferment took over and progressed at warm tempertures, through to full malo and interaction with oxygen. It progressively got better and better as it matured and developed great flavour, creaminess and structure. Not fruit aroma but a nice savoury styling without bruised apple.

Topped but not sulphured for 10 months. No adds apart from a tiny amount of sulphur pre bottling. One rack before bottling with no fining or filtration. Just over a year in bottle before release.

Blend : Savagnin (100%)
ABV : 12%
Closure : Screw Cap
Drink Until : 2027
Bottle Size : 1500ml
