About

About The Wine

Dave Mackintosh's Arfion label has a good track record with this popular grape, and his style really captures the freshness of 'Grigio' with the texture of 'Gris'.

Unlike the vast majority of Pinot Grigio on the market, his is very much hand-made from start to finish. It comes from the Coombe vineyard in the warmer Lower Yarra Valley area - a site with a great track record for Pinot Gris.

The fruit was hand-picked in the cool early morning to retain freshness and concentration, with whole bunches, older oak and some lees stirring adding nice texture and interest.

It's zippy and refreshing on the one hand, chewy and thought-provoking on the other. A quality Pinot Grigio from Dave and super value.

About Arfion

New Zealand born Dave "Bro" Mackintosh is the head man at Arfion.

After cutting his teeth at Oyster Bay, Dave settled in Victoria's Yarra Valley and after working with Steve Flamsteed at Giant Steps, began his own brand Arfion: which means 'Our Wine' in Scottish Gaelic.

Dave is all about letting the fruit do the talking, guiding rather than forcing, constantly searching for the simplest way to get young, energetic wines into the bottle for people to enjoy.

His Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio are all effortless examples of wines made with a ‘less is more’ mentality. By working with some of the best growers in the Yarra Valley, Dave has put together a gorgeous range of wines that have interest and drinkability in spades.

Critic Reviews

DDS review

The nose is delicate and fragrant, with aromas of apples, pears, roses and spicy cinnamon. The palate is dry but textural, with flavours of stone fruits, fennel and hints of minerals. A chewy, racy finish to a lovely wine. - Different Drop Wine Team

Additional Info

From The Producer

Pinot Grigio from Italy and Pinot Gris from France are two very different styles that we shouldn’t try to emulate here in Australia. In the Yarra Valley, our soils produce a style of wine that naturally sits somewhere in the middle of these old world counterparts. So let’s go with that.

However, we call this wine Pinot Grigio because it’s dry with an acid backbone and a savoury, moreish character. Seems to make sense. It exhibits red apple, rose and spicy cinnamon aromas with a hint of bread crust goodness. The palate is dry, savoury and textural with preserved lemon rind, fennel and pear flavours.
