2018 A.Rodda Cuvee de Chez

Beechworth, VIC

Excellent Bordeaux blend from the oldest Cabernet vineyard in Beechworth.

Subtle and still powerful. Terrific stuff.

About The Wine

Loosely translating to Cellar Blend, Cuvee de Chez is Adrian's interpretation of a traditional Bordeaux blend.

We see a blend of 5 varieties in this wine, shown off with great finesse. The Cabernet Sauvignon providing structure; Merlot & Cabernet Franc providing red fruit flavours and savouriness, a little splash of Petit Verdot adds acidity and a tiny hint of Malbec gives a dark roundness to the finish.

Built around balance, not out and out power, there is some clear craftsmanship shown in this great release.

From The Producer

Aromas of spiced plums, liquorice and red currants are heightened by floral notes of violets and dried rose petals. The supple fruit characters of red currants and plums, flow across the palate seamlessly interwoven with velvety tannins giving the wine great balance and finesse.

Cabernet Sauvignon was crushed and de-stemmed whereas the other four varieties incorporated more whole berries. During fermentation, the timing and combination of pump-overs, “rack and returns”, pigeage and plunging was to preserve aromatics and perfume yet extract adequate tannins for structure and length, depending on the variety. Post-fermentation, the Cabernet Sauvignon was held on skins for a further 12 days than the other varieties. All wines were pressed to French oak barriques (25% first use) for a 15 month elevage.

The Real Review

"A vibrant indigo hue in the glass. Red licorice, dried red roses, cinnamon and spiced plums - oak is toasty with some hazelnut notes. A very attractive glide across the palate showing raspberries and red plums, acidity and tannins in perfect balance. Subtle and still powerful. Terrific stuff." - Nick Butler (The Real Review)

"This blend of Bordelais grapes is one of the most stylishly understated modern reds being made in Victoria right now. It has such charming aromas of red, blue and purple berries, gentle earth and bracken, as well as super-subtle oak spice and cedar. The palate is so smoothly curated and the velvety tannins carry fresh, pillowy blueberry, blackcurrant and red-berry flavors aloft. Great wine." -
