About The Wine

There aren't many wines made from this variety in Aus, and less that are anywhere near as delicious as this little number from Somm-turned-winemaker, Louisa Chalmer.

Picked from Lou calls, "surely one of the most spectacular vineyards in the King Valley", this spent some time fermenting as whole bunches with a little foot-stomped juice over the top, the oxygen and skin contact really ramping up the volume of flavour and texture in this delicious release.

Only the teeniest, tiniest amount of sulphur was used. It's a cracking amber wine from an exciting new producer.

Critic Reviews

DDS review

"Pours a hazy, honeyed orange with a rose hue. Floral nose with apricot, nutmeg, green pepper and almond. The palate is all about leatherwood honey, subtle sweet spice, and tangelo acidity wrapped in fine, savoury tannins." - Louisa Chalmer, Winemaker

Vineyard & Viticulture

From what is surely one of the most spectacular vineyards in the King Valley. Around 450m above sea level (asl), the soils are iron-rich red clay, the vineyard lies on an east-facing slope. As such, there is a high diurnal temperature variation and a propensity for the soils to retain cool and moisture, contributing to high acidity and floral notes in the wines whilst the grapes achieve optimum ripeness. The grapes are unirrigated, cropped at low levels (around 2t/acre), hand picked, copper and sulphur applied when necessary (generally 1-2 applications/year). Glyphosate applied under vine rows (we’re working on this!), although withholding periods etc are maintained.

Winemaking

Hand-picked in the early morning, the grapes were left whole bunch, sorted, then pigeaged on the top layer to create a protective juice covering, whilst bunches at the bottom of the ferment were left whole, so some carbonic maceration took place (~40%). Left on skins for a total of ten days, the ferment was gently rolled every three days or so to move the juice/grapes around. Pressed off to older French oak& hand bottled in September 2017with 7ppm sulphur.
