About The Wine

This dynamic couple were named as the Best New Act at the 2015 Young Guns of Wine Awards.

The story of Year Wines is one of love and family, of serendipity and opportunity. When Luke met Caleigh whilst working as a lowly cellar hand, it was love at first sight. Eight years, two kids and a mortgage later and they are producing some gorgeous small-batch wines together.

Their wines are made in minuscule quantities, often no more than 30 dozen at a time, and their raw quality and undeniable personality make them very highly sort after.

The Year Wines Mataro Shiraz Grenache is beautiful in its simplicity. The small Grenache component lending an aromatic boost to the savoury, more guttural tones of the Mataro, the Shiraz adding the sweet mid-palate richness. The grapes come from two vineyards, Luke and Caleigh looking for balance and drinkability here and they find it in spades.

The three varieties dance together beautifully.

From The Producer

Named loosely after Sergio Hermann, a dutch 3 michelin star Chef. His documentary, called ‘Fucking Brilliant’ follows the last few months of his restaurant before he shuts it down, whilst it’s at its peak in order to spend more time with his family.

A mixture of 2 vineyards. The Grenache and Syrah are from the block next to our place and the Mataro from about a km down the road. Both are in Whites Valley sub-region (Southern McLaren Vale) with the geology being Christie’s beach formation: alluvial clay, sand and gravel. Grenache planted in the 50’s, Syrah and Mataro 20+years old.

Fermented seperately, Mataro and Grenache de-stemmed, the Syrah (which was picked early @ 11.9 Be’) was 50% whole bunch. Wild yeast, hand plunged and kept on skins for a few weeks before basket pressing to French oak (The Mataro 6-7 year old hogs heads, the Grenache and Syrah 10-12 year old barriques. Kept on full lees until racking to bottle.
Unfined and unfiltered.

All vegan friendly too…

The Wine Front

"All fermented separately, but then brought together for some magic. Year Wines are reliably good drinking.Sloshy, jubey, easy going red of vibrant, fresh fruit character. It’s heady in musk, sweet berry, cherry and clove scents, with similar in the palate, drawn long on lightly chewy tannins and a brisk coil of acidity. It ain’t all that complex, but it is very easy to drink, and has layers to it beyond a simple guzzler. Texture is the clincher, smooth as." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
