About
It is a glorious example of grenache...

James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion

About The Wine

Yangarra is arguably Australia's finest producer of Grenache, and this stunning wine is surely one of their finest (and best value) releases yet.

Their remarkable, certified biodynamic vineyard in the higher reaches of McLaren Vale produces a fleet of awe-inspiring Grenache, with this 'Old Vine' release being the heart and soul of the lineup.

The fruit comes from 70-year-old, non-irrigated bush vines, with Yangarra's incredible winery doing its bit to maintain all the purity of fruit and natural vineyard character in the wine. It's not jubey and juicy, nor is it rich and inky - this is an emphatically perfumed, seriously structured, utterly delicious Grenache that will only improve with time in the cellar.

97 points from James Halliday and just a no-brainer for any Grenache lover.  Stock up!

About Yangarra

Yangarra Estate is one of a small group of powerhouse wineries to raise its head from the sandy soils of Blewitt Springs in McLaren Vale. Their wines are made entirely from an amazing old bush vine single vineyard, with the 2016 Halliday Winemaker of the Year, Peter Fraser, pulling the reins as winemaker. They are a certified biodynamic wine producer, and have even been named International Winery of the Year, twice!

They specialise in varieties found in the Rhone Valley. In the reds, their Grenache is as good as any in the land and is truly world class, with Shiraz and Mourvedre not far behind. The same applies to whites, the Roussanne expressions from Fraser’s experimentation with ceramic eggs are some of the most interesting in the country. In time, each of the 13 Rhone varieties will be grown on the Yangarra block.

A premium benchmark for the Blewitt Springs sub-region, and one of the country's modern day icon producers.

VINEYARD INFORMATION

Sourced solely from vines which were planted in 1946, these old bush vines are not irrigated and are pruned to an average of 20 buds per vine and shoot thinned to the same number in Spring to ensure there is balance to the canopy with each bunch being evenly spread. The vineyard is certified Biodynamic (certification # 11587) with Australian Certified Organic. We have quite a practical approach, with our philosophy focused around healthy and alive soil, which involves no use of synthetic herbicides or fungicides, use of compost and biodynamic preparations, use of sheep in winter to graze under vine, and minimal mechanical soil disruption.

Halliday Wine Companion

"Planted in 1946 on a sand dune in the cooler, elevated northeast of McLaren Vale. Hand-picked and sorted in the winery, the fermentation is wild. It is a glorious example of grenache picked earlier than in the past, retaining all the freshness of red cherries/berries, spices starting to build, tannins beautifully shaped." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

The Wine Front

"The vines were just over 70 years old at harvest. The thought crosses my mind every now and again that Yangarra may be the best producer in the country. Or is a contender for that mantle, anyway.  $35 for this kind of quality is really quite something. It’s a superb grenache. It takes time in the glass to hit its straps but once its does, wow. So intricately tannic, so fresh faced and yet so sturdy, so dialled in. Woodsy spices and red berries, savouriness and sweetness, X factor. Seriously impressive." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
