About The Wine

The Ironheart Shiraz is a blend of the best barrels from the most 'profound' block of Shiraz on the biodynamically grown Yangarra estate in McLaren Vale.

This, the most distinctive of the twelve blocks of Shiraz on the Yangarra vineyard, yields Shiraz fruit of immense concentration and complexity. The wine has an easy power and authority, a commanding presence and a wine built for great things in coming decades.

The fruit is rich yet balanced, the viticultural team at Yangarra mustering the regional concentration and stature of their hero variety whilst maintaining freshness and purity at the same time.

It's big but beautiful is the message. A benchmark example of Shiraz from this region and now one of the most collectable in all of South Australia.

About Yangarra

Yangarra Estate is one of a small group of powerhouse wineries to raise its head from the sandy soils of Blewitt Springs in McLaren Vale. Their wines are made entirely from an amazing old bush vine single vineyard, with the 2016 Halliday Winemaker of the Year, Peter Fraser, pulling the reins as winemaker. They are a certified biodynamic wine producer, and have even been named International Winery of the Year, twice!

They specialise in varieties found in the Rhone Valley. In the reds, their Grenache is as good as any in the land and is truly world class, with Shiraz and Mourvedre not far behind. The same applies to whites, the Roussanne expressions from Fraser’s experimentation with ceramic eggs are some of the most interesting in the country. In time, each of the 13 Rhone varieties will be grown on the Yangarra block.

A premium benchmark for the Blewitt Springs sub-region, and one of the country's modern day icon producers.

From The Producer

The name Ironheart speaks to the reddish ironstone gravel soil and represents the most eloquent expression of Shiraz from our unique estate. This wine aspires to be a powerhouse, yet showcasing perfume and an elegant side to its dense sanguine character and tannin-built structure.

Sourced from block 15 (1.8 Ha) which lies amongst a gravelly ironstone outcrop (where the North Maslin sand geology comes to the surface). Of the twelve individual blocks of Shiraz on our estate, this block produces the most profound fruit.

Certified organic/biodynamic.

Blend : Shiraz (100%)
ABV : 14.5%

Critic Reviews

99Points
Halliday Wine Companion

"Hand-picked, 75% destemmed and berry-sorted, 25% whole bunches, wild-fermented, on lees in French oak (35% new) for 15 months then a barrel selection to showcase the characteristic ironstone it grows in. A magnificent wine with length to its stride and a lightness of foot." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

95Points
The Wine Front

"This is beautiful, held to medium weight but with a cornucopia of spice an absolute and dominating feature. Garam masala, Chinese five spice, paprika in there and a dash of white pepper, it’s hauntingly scented and flavours are fresh albeit doused in this souk. Ripe and dark fruit characters, a touch of rum n raisin, dried plum and earthy berries. Shale-like minerality here too. Magnificent length unfurling over layers of fine, silty tannin and cool, faintly herbal acidity. Shapeless but tight, lacy and yet stacked with flavour, this is such a great shiraz." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
