About

About The Wine

There are few wineries in Australia with as clear a vision as Yangarra.

Their commitment to producing world class, Australian grown, Rhone style wines is second to none. With their remarkable, biodynamic McLaren Vale vineyard and the formidable winemaking skills of Peter Fraser, Yangarra is one of the most exciting wine ventures in the country.

Their High Sands Grenache is a wine to behold. It has been compared to the great Grenaches of Chateauneuf du Pape, iconic wines like Rayas and Beaucastel. This release of the High Sands marks another step forward in the assertion of truly great Australian wines on the world stage.

James Halliday awarded this vintage 99 points, placing it again at the top of the Australian Grenache pantheon. If you want to see the very best Grenache that Australia has to offer, the High Sands is a drinking experience that will stay with you for many years to come.

About Yangarra

Yangarra Estate is one of a small group of powerhouse wineries to raise its head from the sandy soils of Blewitt Springs in McLaren Vale. Their wines are made entirely from an amazing old bush vine single vineyard, with the 2016 Halliday Winemaker of the Year, Peter Fraser, pulling the reins as winemaker. They are a certified biodynamic wine producer, and have even been named International Winery of the Year, twice!

They specialise in varieties found in the Rhone Valley. In the reds, their Grenache is as good as any in the land and is truly world class, with Shiraz and Mourvedre not far behind.

The same applies to whites, the Roussanne expressions from Fraser’s experimentation with ceramic eggs are some of the most interesting in the country. In time, each of the 13 Rhone varieties will be grown on the Yangarra block.

A premium benchmark for the Blewitt Springs sub-region, and one of the country's modern day icon producers.

From The Producer

High Sands is our grail. It captures the essence of our prized old vines. For us, High Sands means intense, brilliant, taut yet harmonious, serene, wholesome and complex.

High Sands is grown on the highest point of our white/grey, ancient sandy dunes, on the very top of our estate. The gnarly old bush vines were planted by Frederick Arthur Smart and his sons in 1946. His eldest son, Bernard Smart still lives adjacent to our property and to this day farms Grenache at Clarendon.

Critic Reviews

99Points
Halliday Wine Companion

"From Block 31, the highest elevation at 210m, with the deepest sand. Hand-picked, mechanically sorted, 50% whole berries, open-fermented, 21 days on skins, 11 months on lees in French oak. A rainbow of aromas, leading me to abort my first mental description because I'd already run out of breath." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

93Points
The Wine Front

"Quite rich and ripe feeling, slippery texture segues to sheets on sheets of grippy, puckering, powdery tannin. It’s quite brutish and rough house as a release under this High Sands guise, not lesser for it, but misses a little of the finesse of previous. Booze soaked cherry scents and flavours, a bit breathy and warming in sniff and tongue, around this, lavish spice, ripe fruit, dried fruit and savoury things like salted liquorice, salt bush and faint game meat characters. Packs in plenty of detail, lots to sink teeth into." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
