About The Wine

This beautiful example of McLaren Vale Grenache comes from a rugged old bush vines planted in Blewitt Springs almost 50 years ago.

A delicate handling in the winery by winemaker Michael Corbett has perfectly preserved the ethereal quality that these old vines produce. The epic aromatics, the glorious texture, the vivaciousness of this wine is something to behold.

This is the quintessential modern McLaren Vale Grenache.

Gary Walsh of The Wine Front writes, "Delicacy, almost translucent, and very fine. It’s a beautiful wine." in his 95 point review.

It's a stunning thing to drink.

About Vanguardist

Vanguardist is an up and coming producer from McLaren Vale started by three friends after many long nights in Hawkes Bay talking about their shared love of wine.

Their mission is to bring premium, authentic, small-batch wines to a market they see as crowded by "overly commercialised wines produced by corporates who take up all the elbow room."

They source very high-quality fruit from great vineyards across South Australia, looking to build wines with texture and vibrancy.

With experienced winemaker Michael Corbett at the helm, the future looks bright for this plucky challenger brand.

WINEMAKING
The Grenache that makes up this wine comes from outstanding spot in Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale. A hidden gem of sorts, the high ‘Silver Sands’ vineyard was planted by Robert Rende and his father 47 years ago. He has nurtured these dry farmed bush vines with minimal intervention, and we are now implementing organic practices in the vineyard.

We use small (1T) fermenters to separate batches and pick the vineyard several times to ensure a spectrum of flavours and natural acid balance. Various methods including maceration carbonique, partial destem and extended maceration of up to 287 days were used. Minimal physical extraction is implemented (no pumping and very minimal pigeage), rather time with skins/stems sees the development of tannin, flavour and aroma.

All batches are kept separate in a mixture of barriques and puncheons, and after about a year of elevage the different batches are blended just prior to bottling. No fining or filtration is used, and minimal SO2 of around 80PPM total is added at bottling.

Critic Reviews

95Points
The Wine Front

"Anyway, fine and almost delicate wines, from the hands of a big gruff man.Red fruits, flowers, nuts, basil and spice. It’s medium-bodied, all strawberry and spice, cool acidity, a bony feel to the tannin, though they’re very ripe and fine and shape the wine beautifully, but the finish is where the action is, pulling a little savoury with a firm stroke of polishing sandpaper tannin. Delicacy, almost translucent, and very fine. It’s a beautiful wine. It’ll be better again with a few years bottle age." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

DDS review

"The three Vanguardists share a torrid love for grenache and its not hard to see why. This is beguilingly graceful grenache, rippling with cranberries and dried raspberries, some dry herb and fennel seed. Supple acidity, whispering tannins, a skilfully subtle deployment of structure." - Nick Ryan (The Australian)

No our pricing is aiming to the best in the market already. For very large orders (weddings etc) we are open to negotiating though. Just give us a call. How does the price match work?

Everyday Low & Consistent Pricing is something we strongly believe in. We want our customers to feel confident they are always getting the best price. If you see a price lower somewhere else let us know and we'll match it. We'll even retrospectively refund you if you have already purchased from us but you see a lower price somewhere later on. If it’s doable, then we’ll make it happen. Just contact us directly via phone, chat or email and we’ll find out for you right away. Please note that in most cases special orders such as these will need to be in full case lots (6 or 12 bottles).
