About The Wine

This is an exquisite example of a leaner modern style of Australian Chardonnay.

Winemaker Michael Corbett has sought out a site in the Adelaide Hills that can produce a taut, mineral-charged example of Chardonnay with plenty of flavour.

Where some Chardonnays picked early like this lack flavour and complexity, this has both in spades. Nick Ryan dubbed it "thrillingly taut and high-toned with a sparkling, crystalline edge", Gary Walsh praised it as, "So refreshing and good to drink."

If you like your Chardonnay in a more lithe frame, this will be right up your alley.

Only 95 dozen made.

About Vanguardist

Vanguardist is an up and coming producer from McLaren Vale started by three friends after many long nights in Hawkes Bay talking about their shared love of wine.

Their mission is to bring premium, authentic, small-batch wines to a market they see as crowded by "overly commercialised wines produced by corporates who take up all the elbow room."

They source very high-quality fruit from great vineyards across South Australia, looking to build wines with texture and vibrancy.

With experienced winemaker Michael Corbett at the helm, the future looks bright for this plucky challenger brand.

The Wine Front

"Milky, aniseed and bruised apple, with floral scents, maybe some citrus. It’s light and tangy, plenty of crunch and flavour, despite its delicate frame, subtle chalky texture, lemon and rind, bell-clear acidity, excellent line and length. There’s a touch of cider edginess, yet it’s clean and fresh. So refreshing and good to drink. Hard to not to race through it, though it’s more than just yum: it has complexity and energy. Yes." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

DDS review

"I was one of many who thought Corbett mad when he picked the fruit for this wine at an edgy 11.5 degrees Baume, but going at the earliest suggestion of ripeness has paid off. The wine is thrillingly taut and high-toned with a sparkling, crystalline edge, but somehow manages to also deliver a degree of mid palate richness and texture that defies the numbers. Its jaw droppingly good." - Nick Ryan (The Australian)

Additional Info

From The Producer

Our Chardonnay fruit was hand harvested from the Bowe-Lees and Loveys Vineyards in Woodside, Adelaide Hills which lies 390 metres above sea level.

Foot crushed at the winery and held cold for several days prior to pressing. Post pressing, this wine was transferred with full solids to a mixture of 3-5 year old barriques then fermented naturally and left on full lees prior to being racked by gravity a couple of times in December.

95 dozen made.
