About The Wine

The Thousand Candles Field Blend is the flagship release from Stu Proud at the new look Thousand Candles vineyard.

This is a wine intended to showcase the best fruit of the season. The 2017 blend is built from Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Merlot - a unique blend, no doubt, but one that represents the best of the best from the Thousand Candles team in the stellar 2017 vintage.

You get all the tantalising vibrant aromatics from the Pinot Noir, the spice and firmness from the Yarra Valley Shiraz and the Merlot lends seductive base notes of black olive and some lush fruit.

The structure here is excellent. The balance, bang on. This wine tells a unique story of a great vineyard in a great vintage. It's a brilliant release from Stu and the team.

About Thousand Candles

Thousand Candles is one of the most hallowed vineyards in the Yarra Valley and is currently in the midst of something of a resurgence. The site is managed by the rugged hands of Stuart Proud, one of the Valley's most respected viticulturalists.

Stu farms his grapes and livestock with a deep understanding of biological farming, fostering a thriving ecosystem on the property with to create the ideal environment to produce first-class fruit.

The wines that come from this site all share a common DNA, the vineyard characteristics shining through in their earthiness and impressive tannin structure. The wines of Thousand Candles are currently made by Stu who looks to minimal intervention in the winery, trusting that his hard work amongst the vines will pay dividends in the cellar.

Thus far, his impressive results speak for themselves.

From The Producer

This is a wine made to capture all parts of the farm and give a true representation of the soil, the season and the site. We expect the blend to change each year, depending on the season. Some of the wine was co-fermented (season dependent) however most of the 2017 vintage was from selected barrels in the winery. There is some influence of wild ferment and whole bunch fermentation in the pinot noir and Syrah components.

All components were aged in 4-7 year old French oak barriques and hogsheads with a small percentage of the merlot component being aged in a new oak barrel for a period of 6 months. Blended and bottled in November to capture the verve of the season and a sense of the site

Blend : Pinot Noir (49%), Shiraz (33%), Merlot (18%)
ABV : 13.50%

Critic Reviews

The Wine Front

"Juicy ripe berries, coffee grounds, a pleasant amount of spicy herbal whole bunch that tempers and greets the flesh of the fruit, chocolate and roses. Medium-bodied, mainly into the red fruits, stroke of emery board tannin, quiet acidity, subtle earthiness and spice, with the tannin picking up and firming the finish – almost like a Turkish coffee. Plenty of interest, and drinking pleasure. Like this a lot." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Halliday Wine Companion

"49% pinot noir, 33% shiraz and 18% merlot. Pinot has the upper hand here, but the expectation is it will vary from year to year depending on the season. It looks back to the beliefs and practises of Thousand Candles' first winemaker Bill Downie. I didn't expect this odd blend to work as well as it does, but it is juicy and seductive. Though, for the record, not a true field blend." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

Nice if you like them a little older

Perfectly fine Pinot if you prefer the fuller, rounder earthier flavour that a little bottle age brings.

No our pricing is aiming to the best in the market already. For very large orders (weddings etc) we are open to negotiating though. Just give us a call. How does the price match work?

Everyday Low & Consistent Pricing is something we strongly believe in. We want our customers to feel confident they are always getting the best price. I am trying to add more of a wine to my cart but it won’t let me?

This means we are running low on stock of that wine. So for example, if the website will only allow you to add 3 bottles and no more, then that is all we have of that particular wine. The good news is we may be able to order more for you. Just contact us on 1300 668 385 or hello@differentdrop.com and we'll organise the additional quantity for you.

Can I special order a wine you do not sell?

If it’s doable, then we’ll make it happen. Just contact us directly via phone, chat or email and we’ll find out for you right away. Please note that in most cases special orders such as these will need to be in full case lots (6 or 12 bottles).
