About The Wine

The relaunch, or perhaps a rekindling of the Thousand Candles project is well under way.

Viticultural-guru-come-winemaker Stuart Proud bringing an excellent release to bottle from 2017 under the Thousand Candles banner. From a close to perfect vintage in the Yarra Valley, Stuart selected the best blocks of Pinot Noir from this famous, or perhaps infamous, Yarra Valley site.

It's a carefully etched lattice work of a wine. So clearly Yarra Valley in its accent but with some defining features - tannin structure namely - that could only come from a vineyard of special character.

It's a wine which sets a new tone for the brand. The unforced and uncomplicated wine in the bottle is simply great value.

About Thousand Candles

Thousand Candles is one of the most hallowed vineyards in the Yarra Valley and is currently in the midst of something of a resurgence. The site is managed by the rugged hands of Stuart Proud, one of the Valley's most respected viticulturalists.

Stu farms his grapes and livestock with a deep understanding of biological farming, fostering a thriving ecosystem on the property with to create the ideal environment to produce first-class fruit.

The wines that come from this site all share a common DNA, the vineyard characteristics shining through in their earthiness and impressive tannin structure. The wines of Thousand Candles are currently made by Stu who looks to minimal intervention in the winery, trusting that his hard work amongst the vines will pay dividends in the cellar.

Thus far, his impressive results speak for themselves.

From The Producer

This wine shows aromatic floral notes and red fruit on the nose. An earthy palate with an undertow of dusty cherries, red berries and pomegranate. Some fine, chalky tannins and bright acid make this a savoury and structural wine. Lovely wine from a fantastic vintage.

Wine Making:
This fruit was hand-picked from selected parcels of fruit from our best blocks. The blocks have an easterly aspect that enables them to avoid harsh afternoon sun. The fruit was picked in the early morning into 10kg creates, hand sorted in the winery before being de-stemmed and put into the fermenters.
The wines had very minimal intervention during the 2-3 weeks of fermenting. Wines were pumped over at the start and the end and only some gentle plunging towards the end of the ferment. This allows the wines to retain the purity of the fruit and better reflect the vineyards they were grown in. After 6 months in older French oak barriques and hogsheads (3 to 7 years of age), the wine was bottled with minimal sulphites added

"Here’s an interesting wine, and in some respects, tastes perhaps like a place and philosophy, over grape variety. No bad thing either way, but don’t mind me. Perfumed and spicy, with a sappy kind of cherry elixir flavour nuzzling against an earthy/savoury, what you might perhaps call ‘natural wine’ feel. Grainy tannin sits deep and rumbles away insistently, and while there’s a flicker of green herb though the wine, it feels at its core to be fruit driven and that baked beetroot earthy thing gives it an intriguing bass note. It’s interesting and full of personality, and good to drink. In short, I like it very much." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

    Amazing Pinot

One of the best pinots I’ve tasted for the price. It’s smooth, rich and juicy. Different and more complex than other Yarra valley pinots.
