2017 Suertes del Marques 7 Fuentes El Lance

Tenerife, Spain

Fascinating smoky and sinewy red from the Canary Islands. You won't see these varieties in Australia but think along the lines of Grenache of Tempranillo and you're heading in the right direction.

About
It's a serious red blend...

Luis Guitiérrez (The Wine Advocate)

About The Wine

A top value entry into the the fascinating reds of Suertes del Marqués and Jonatan Garcia Lima.

This is a fascinating, funky, smoky red from the slopes of Spain's highest mountain, on the Altantic island of Tenerife.

Some wild herbal, peppery aromatics, a nice dense red fruit core, and a beautifully balanced finish.

Made from five local varieties grown in the red volcanic soils, Listan Negro being the most notable. Fermented in concrete with some whole bunch, aged in French barrique and puncheon.

About Suertes del Marques

Suertes del Marqués is a family winery that has been producing wines since 2006 on the wind-swept island of Tenerife, part of the Canary Islands, off the Atlantic Coast of Africa.

Guardian of the many indigenous grape varieties, owner/winemaker Jonatan Garcia Lima is passionate about maintaining local winemaking traditions (check out their 'trenzado' trellising), minimal sulphur usage and homeopathic vineyard treatments.

Garcia Lima is part of a small, revolutionary contingent of vignerons that are making it their mission to consolidate and care for the ancient vines on the island. These charming naturally produced wines speak of some wild, untamed terroir and are unlike anything else you will find in Spain or anywhere.

Low sulphur, 'volcano' wine that benefits from aeration, time and an open mind. - Different Drop

"The red that keeps changing with the vintage is the 2017 7 Fuentes El Lance, which, for the first time, is not dominated by Listán Negro, as the blend is 35% each Vijariego Negro and Listán Negro and the remaining 30% Castellana Negra from five different vineyards (Habanera, Florida, Pencones, Cruz Santa and Diego), where only the Listán is pruned in the braided "cordón trenzado." It fermented in plastic bins and concrete vats with part of full clusters, no temperature control and indigenous yeasts. It matured in a combination of used 500-liter oak barrels and concrete vats. It's only 12.5% alcohol, a little lower than the 2015 and a full 1% less than the 2015. In general, they are aiming at reducing the alcohol percentages of their wines, and the 2017s have less alcohol than the 2016s. That also translates into more freshness in the wine. The palate is austere, with fine tannins and a mineral, dry finish. It's a serious red blend; it's interesting to see how the blending of varieties work so well... 8,000 bottles were filled in July 2018." - Luis Guitiérrez (The Wine Advocate)

Full of character

Meaty, savoury aroma. Light to medium body- charcuterie, some herbs and raspberry notes- balanced acidity and surprisingly smooth finish. Really interesting wine.

Do we price match? Yes, within reason. Everyday low & consistent pricing is something we strongly believe in. We want our customers to feel confident they are always getting the best price. I am trying to add more of a wine to my cart but it won’t let me? This means we are running low on stock of that wine.
