About

About the Wine

Tasmania's Pinot Noir Maestro has released a trio of single vineyard Pinot Noirs, highlighting the variety of terroirs within the Derwent River Valley that winds north west out of Hobart.

La Roccia, the Rock, is the plot that produces the most sturdy, structured and cellar-worthy of wines, though it is of course delicious to look at right now.

The fruit is on the darker spectrum with a plummy plushness, and some spicy notes in the background. Good grip.

About Stefano Lubiana

Steve and Monique Lubiana were pioneers of biodynamic farming in Tasmania. Their gorgeous estate was the first to adopt the principals of biodynamics in 2008. Since then the quality of the Stefano Lubiana premium range has soared. The wines are immaculate: Pinot noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Sparklings all packed with flavour intensity and perfectly balanced.

As Mike Bennie observed, "Geez, there’s been some wind in the sail on their estate in southern Tasmania. This is top notch stuff right here." Steve, a fifth-generation winemaker, is now one of Tasmania's leading producers, no doubt about it.

Additional Info

From the Producer

We have spent the last 30 years working on identifying specialized sites on our Granton Estate for the development of an iconic Pinot Noir. This Single Block range has been selected for their specific terrior or soil type to truly express the uniqueness and individual personality of the Pinot Noir variety.

La Roccia, or the ‘rock’ in Italian, is a nod to the main geological feature of this block; a large limestone rock shelf in the middle of the block. The La Roccia block is always first picked and consistently produces wines with the greatest structure and tannin of the three blocks.

Blend : Pinot Noir (100%)

The Wine Front

Great to see a producer bottling small plots of vineyard, not least in a great Tassie year like 2017. The bottle is different to the image here, and sports a Comte Georges de Vogüé style capsule, but with Stefano Lubiana written on the black band in white. Italian names, Burgundy capsule, Australian soil. It’s all go! It’s the length that defines this wine, and yes, there’s plenty of that. Dark cherry, spice, subtle earthiness, flowers, and perhaps it’s subliminal, but crushed rock is a big part of the style. It has a Barbaresco character, though it’s identifiably Pinot Noir, though I offer that comment because the structure of it is top shelf, and serious. Raspberry and red cherry, freshness and energy, with an intensity and aforementioned length that’s second to none. Superb. - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

This is the diplomat of this triumvirate and damn, holy it is. Mid-weight, crunchy and melding the red berry sass of the Ruscello plot with the herbal spine of the Il Giardino and its whole-cluster drive. This is infinitely long, etched with tannin, extract and sex appeal. Refined. Gorgeous. Length pushes the score. These single-plot Pinots are among the finest of the country, demanding serious attention. - Ned Goodwin (Halliday Wine Magazine)
