About The Wine

Pete Schell continues to explore the possibilities with Shiraz/Syrah in his beloved Barossa Valley, and this vibrant and lifted Syrah is a gorgeous drink.

Designed as a more understated and elegant version of Barossa Shiraz, Schell picks fruit from a couple of different, cooler sites in the Barossa and Eden Valleys. The grapes are picked earlier to retain freshness and perfume, before seeing a mixture of stainless steel and wooden and concrete fermenters.

Wow, it's delicious! Wild and savoury yet soft and sumptuous, this is Barossa Shiraz unlike we usually see it.

Interesting, flavour-packed and moreish with a huge 97 points from James Halliday, this is another winner from this superstar winemaker.

About Spinifex

Spinifex is one of the undercover jewels of the Barossa Valley, and very much a pioneer of the changing direction of this famous region.

Husband and wife team Peter Schell & Magali Gely have extensive experience in southern France, which proves the inspiration for their unique wines made from predominantly Rhone varietals.

Pete’s wines brought a new sensibility to the region; they were lower in alcohol, concentrated but elegant, and balanced to perfection. He takes the art of blending into the realm of the virtuoso.

There are few wineries who deliver refinement and poise from the Barossa Valley like Spinifex.  These are brilliant Barossa wines.

Additional Info

From The Producer

The wine, naturally fermented with a judicious use of whole clusters (on average 30%) in a combination of stainless steel, wood and concrete fermenters, also sees a shorter maturation than the Esprit and Bête Noir, et al. The 2017 was cropped from five high, exposed parcels in the Barossa and Eden Valley, where the soils are generally poor and skeletal - for the most part light, gravelly and silty sands over deeply weathered base rocks of varied origins. Vine age varies from 25 to 115 years old (averaging 50 years old), and all fruit is hand harvested.

Blend : Shiraz (100%)
Closure : Screw Cap
Drink Until : 2023
Bottle Size : 750ml

Critic Reviews

DDS review

"On the nose, bright red cherry leads off, followed by subtle gamey notes and red licorice and pepper. The palate has red fruits, anise, subtle gameyness and spice on the palate, all rounded out with integrated fine grained tannins." - Artisans of the Barossa

97Points
Halliday Wine Companion

"20-50yo vines, whole berry and whole bunch ferments in, 8 months in French oak (10% new). From Yarra Valley pinot to Barossa Valley shiraz is a massive distance, yet the '17 vintage has kissed them both, with lower alcohol levels and producing wines of great intensity, length and balance. The Barossa Valley seldom has spice and licorice as first up aromas and flavours, but it does that in spades here, the palate a glorious rendition. It borders on full-bodied, but to leave or reduce any part of what is here would be vinocide." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

Delivery times vary considerably with Australia Post and unfortunately there is no Express Delivery Option for wine (because it is fragile and heavy). PLEASE NOTE that we are currently seeing significant delays in the Australia Post delivery network. Strict government health and safety requirements and very high parcel volumes are causing significant backlogs at the main NSW and VIC sorting facilities. Orders are still arriving safe and sound but you may notice slower delivery times and less frequent scanning updates than usual.

Do we price match? Yes, within reason. Everyday low & consistent pricing is something we strongly believe in. We want our customers to feel confident they are always getting the best price. I am trying to add more of a wine to my cart but it won’t let me? This means we are running low on stock of that wine.
