About The Wine

Introducing Papillon - one of the most gluggable reds in the Barossa Valley!

The Spinifex wines cover a wide spectrum, from rich, full-throttled old vine Shiraz all the way to this, a light bodied, energetic Grenache Cinsault blend made for easy day-time drinking.

These styles are certainly in vogue but as usual, winemaking wizard Schell elevates it to another level, utilising incredibly old vines and astute winemaking to add depth and complexity to what is joyously pure red berried fruit.

Papillon is one of our go-to's and just unbeatable value.  What a producer Spinifex is.

About Spinifex

Spinifex is one of the undercover jewels of the Barossa Valley, and very much a pioneer of the changing direction of this famous region.

Husband and wife team Peter Schell & Magali Gely have extensive experience in southern France, which proves the inspiration for their unique wines made from predominantly Rhone varietals. Pete’s wines brought a new sensibility to the region; they were lower in alcohol, concentrated but elegant, and balanced to perfection. He takes the art of blending into the realm of the virtuoso.

There are few wineries who deliver refinement and poise from the Barossa Valley like Spinifex.  These are brilliant Barossa wines.

Additional Info

From The Producer

Crafted from a range of old vine, dry grown Grenache and Cinsault (90 years of age on average), located in the east and far northern reaches of the Barossa Valley. Each vineyard is hand harvested when just ripe to "...ensure natural acids, freshness, spice and the fresher, edgier tannins are preserved." As always, the wine is naturally fermented with a portion of whole bunches (30% in this case for heightened fragrance and more freshness) and pulled out of old wood after six months with the same logic.

Blend : Cinsault, Grenache
Closure : Screw cap
Drink Until : 2023
Bottle Size : 750ml

Critic Reviews

DDS review

"Incredibly perfumed with lifted blueberry, strawberry and lavender notes. The palate is super pure, vibrant and juicy with those same, red and blue fruits and southern French florals. Grenadine as well. Really bright and racy, this a wine built of fragrance (on both the nose and the palate). It would do a top southern Rhone producer proud. A deliciously crunchy texture, cleansing acidity, and savoury grip, is somehow perfectly integrated with the wine's generous fruit giving a surreal sense of balance." - Bibendum Wines

Halliday Wine Companion

"58% grenache, 42% cinsaut, 90yo vines, whole berry/whole bunch wild fermentation, 30% matured for 8 months in French oak, 70% in stainless steel and concrete tanks. Light hue; a fragrant bouquet of wild herbs, dusty earth and diminutive red berry aromas is followed by a fresh, lively, spicy palate. Drink to me, it says, but don't talk about me. Hard not to, it's so fresh." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

If your order is placed before 12pm we’ll get it on the truck that day. Delivery times vary considerably with Australia Post and unfortunately there is no Express Delivery Option for wine (because it is fragile and heavy). PLEASE NOTE that we are currently seeing significant delays in the Australia Post delivery network. Strict government health and safety requirements and very high parcel volumes are causing significant backlogs at the main NSW and VIC sorting facilities. Orders are still arriving safe and sound but you may notice slower delivery times and less frequent scanning updates than usual.

Do we price match? Yes, within reason. Everyday low & consistent pricing is something we strongly believe in. We want our customers to feel confident they are always getting the best price. If you see a price lower somewhere else let us know and we'll consider matching it. We'll even retrospectively issue you store credit if you have already purchased from us but you see a lower price somewhere later on. Our price match policy can be seen here.

I am trying to add more of a wine to my cart but it won’t let me? This means we are running low on stock of that wine. So for example, if the website will only allow you to add 3 bottles and no more, then that is all we have of that particular wine. The good news is we may be able to order more for you. Just contact us on 1300 668 385 or hello@differentdrop.com and we'll organise the additional quantity for you.

Does Different Drop have a physical store? No. Just an a warehouse/office. We occasionally do events however, so sign up to our newsletter or follow us on instagram to stay in the loop.

Can I special order a wine you do not sell? If it’s doable, then we’ll make it happen. Just contact us directly via phone, chat or email and we’ll find out for you right away. Please note that in most cases special orders such as these will need to be in full case lots (6 or 12 bottles).
