About

About The Wine

This Aglianico has become a regular part of the Spinifex range, and it's always a deliciously different offering from this winemaking wizard.

Pete was first inspired to make this wine after tasting some Adelaide Hills Aglianico a few years back and finding that it delivered many of the traits he seeks in his reds - terms like "nervy", "high-toned", "chiseled" and "savoury" are ever-present when he speaks about his wines.

It comes from the Amadio vineyard in the northern Adelaide Hills, and with Aglianico being such a late-ripening variety is the last of the Spinifex crop to be picked. It spends a couple of weeks on skins, is fermented in older oak with a portion of stainless steel, and is bottled unfiltered with minimal additions.

Interest and deliciousness writ large here. Super drink.

About Spinifex

Spinifex are one of the 'New' Barossa's true pioneer producers.

Husband and wife team Peter Schell & Magali Gely have extensive experience in southern France, which proves the inspiration for their unique wines made from predominantly Rhone varietals.

Spinifex was on the front line of the new wave of Barossa producers. Peter's wines brought a new sensibility to the region, they were lower in alcohol, concentrated but elegant, and balanced to perfection.

He takes the art of blending into the realm of the virtuoso.

There are few wineries who deliver refinement and poise from the Barossa Valley like Spinifex.

Additional Info

From The Producer

This 2017 Aglianico is drawn from vines rooted in the quartz shot clay and granite of Caj Amadio's vineyard near Kersbrook in the northern Adelaide Hills, (300 metres above sea level). Aglianico is a late ripening variety - more so at this kind of altitude - and these are Spinifex's last vines to be harvested. Aglianico has shown a great affinity for this site with the fruit ripening very late, typically just before the break in the season, with deep flavours, fresh tannins and high natural acids.

Fully destemmed and naturally fermented, the juice spends around two weeks on its skins and is matured in large and small format wood (and a portion of stainless steel). To capture the variety's perfume and bright fruit, it's bottled at ten months without filtration. With the exception of a little sulphur dioxide it was made without any trimmings.

DDS review

It has an expressive and pure nose full of red fruits, herbs and smoke. The palate is medium-bodied a whirlpool of energy and drive, with more red berries and all sorts of herbs and mixed spices swirling through the mouth. There is a tightness to its structure but layers of flavour to go with it. Refreshing, elegant wine, savoury-edged that both raw and polished. Nice! - Different Drop Wine Team

The Wine Front

"Sour and ripe cherry scents, a touch of raspberry lolly, green herbs and faint fennel. The palate is juicy, soft in a way, touched by sweet-sour fruit character, fine sheath of tannins, tangy acidity and good swirl of gummy tannin. This is great fun to drink, it feels, with detail in tow. Very nicely done." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
