Unnerving consistency from one of my favourite (if not favourite) Australian wine producers…

About The Wine

If you are an avid collector of Beechworth's finest Chardonnays then this stunning Chardonnay from Barry and Jan Morey of Sorrenberg needs a place in your cellar.

The cooler site that the Sorrenberg vineyard occupies gives off Chardonnay of elegance and purity, with Barry's winemaking gently building power and texture through 100% barrel fermentation in an astute mixture of new and used oak.

This is a striking, characterful Chardonnay from a gem of a producer. The 2017 vintage received a huge 96 points from The Wine Front's Mike Bennie.

Want Chardonnay that tastes like REAL Chardonnay? Here's a beauty.

About Sorrenberg

Barry and Jan Morey planted their stunning Beechworth vineyard in 1986. Their first release in 1989 began the Sorrenberg story, a story destined to be one of Australia's great estates.

Barry farms with adherence to biodynamics, believing this to be the best way to get the most out of his home block of 2.4 Ha. on the outskirts of Beechworth. Their wines are famous for their balance and longevity. The wines are made in traditional fashion, with wild yeasts for fermentation, gentle oak maturation and basket pressing for each wine.

The Gamay is arguably their most sought after wine, however, the thumbprint of Barry's attention to detail is stamped across each release and the Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc Semillon and Cabernet blend are amongst the finest of heir kind in the country.

Sorrenberg is one of the true gems of Beechworth, and indeed Australian, wine.

Additional Info

From the Producer

Our Chardonnay is 100% barrel fermented in french oak with 25-30% of this being new oak. To add complexity to the wine all of it goes through natural yeast fermentation, as well all of it goes through complete malo-lactic fermentation. This wine received extended lees contact for ten months with weekly stirring. Then a further eight months barrel maturation. The longer time in barrel restricts this wines openness for a few months so be patient. Minimal handling and filtration ensures maximum flavour is retained.

Critic Reviews

DDS review

"The bouquet of the 2017 Chardonnay displays aromas of citrus with some peach overtones. This follows on to the pallet to reveal an extensive and complex finish. The noteworthy oak compliments the refreshing, integrated acid creating a balanced, multi dimensional wine." - Barry Morey, Owner/Winemaker

"Unnerving consistency from one of my favourite (if not favourite) Australian wine producers… another stellar release here, though a little cuddlier from 2017. Great to see full flavour of grape with judicious accompanying ‘winemaking approach’. Charisma plus, drinkability. I showed the wine to a touring group of upper tier European wine journalists today alongside Tolpuddle Chardonnay, and this was preferred by most, with some sagely nods around the table. When they left, I swigged the last inch from the bottle. Satisfying. It opens with strong chardonnay scents of ripe stone fruit, apple, honeysuckle, with faint nougat, almond and ‘general minerality’ chiming in. The palate is soft, mouth-filling, but inherently fresh, offering white stone fruit character, supple texture, incredible persistence and a general feel of richness despite the undercurrent of grapefruity acidity. More ‘mineral sense’ to be found in the palate, a lick of honey too. I’d be drinking this younger than most Sorrenberg chardonnay, it’s a wine that feels relaxed and comfortable now, but a spell in the cellar will also be a charm. Such pleasure." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
