About the Wine

Some seriously eye-catching wines released from the two lads at Somos/Juguette in recent times. Here's a highly chuggable Rosé made from Barbera grapes grown in McLaren Vale.

This is raised in old oak barrels, then bottled without fining or filtering - a bountiful Rosé with bucket loads of energy is what has emerged. The long, drawn-out 2017 vintage meant that Barbera was picked much later than usual for the Somos lads. A gentle pressing and attentive lees stirring ensuring that the texture and vitality of the 2017 is as fresh as ever.

Such an interesting wine.  How good is Aussie Rosé!

About Somos

The Somos wines are the product of two enthusiastic young winemakers - one Australian and one Mexican - looking to make interesting and contemporary wines from McLaren Vale. Benjamin Caldwell and Mauricio Ruiz Cantu are the creative duo behind this exciting project, with the wines exported back to South & Central America as well as sold through just a handful of outlets and venues locally in Australia.

The focus is on 'alternative' varieties from sustainably managed vineyards - their Aglianicos being of particular note. Their unique wines are made with a deft touch, the resulting styles perfumed and balanced, bursting with energy and personality. Just minuscule volumes produced, but great fun to be had across the Somos range.

This is a rock n roll Rosé. Chewy, textural, brimming with cranberry and raspberry flavours. A sour clinch of red fruit follwed by soft, creamy lees characters. Some grip through the mouth and bell-clear acidity. Great drinking. - Different Drop Wine Team

Additional Info

From the Producer

Coming from a vineyard adjacent to the Cabernet Franc, but to the East of the slate creek in willunga. 2017 offered some challenges for Barbera being such a late ripening variety, we were forced to pick 2 days earlier than scheduled to avoid incoming rain. The fruit came in in good condition, but a little less integrity given the weather.

Pressing was very gentle and we made a quite early press cut to avoid over extraction and excessive colour. Free run juice went straight to barrel and was left to start fermentation naturally to build some wild character, we then inoculated with a non-saccharomyces/saccharomyces yeast blend to ensure a strong finish to fermentation. The wine went through a partial malic, about 20%, and was left on full solids for weekly lees stirring. Bottled intentionally cloudy to retain that rustic texture. Roll it like a cooper’s or decant it like a red.
