About
A spring wine that instantly transports you to a breezy, brisk afternoon picnic with friends.

Justin McNamee, Owner/Winemaker

About the Wine

Justin McNamee is a firm believer in making wines that are built to drink in our warm Australian climate. His reds have a rusticity and savoury charm that harkens back to the wines of the old world but with modern Australian brightness.

The same themes show in the release of his Pinata People Gamay. This is a vibrant and expressive Gamay with flavour packed in tight. There's an element of earth and spice here which offsets the perky strawberry and plum flavours.

The yin and yang of the Gamay grape captured wonderfully by this unique McLaren Vale producer. It's down-right delicious to drink.

About Samuel's Gorge

Samuel’s Gorge is one of McLaren Vale’s best-kept secrets. There, in his quiet neck of the woods, owner/winemaker Justin McNamee is on a mission to build “wines that are distinctly Australian with reference to the old world for texture, complexity and harmony.”

The Samuel's Gorge wines may be scarcely available but they are highly renowned. Shiraz and Grenache are considered his fortè, but he makes stellar examples of Tempranillo, Graciano, Gamay and more.  Justin works with some of McLaren Vale's top vineyards, preferring to entrust the region's top growers to do what they do best, while he concentrates on crafting the wines together and greeting customers at his much-loved cellar door.

These are wines with a distinct personality and a rustic feel, from an adored cult SA producer.

From the Producer

The 2017 ‘Piñata People’ Gamay is vivid garnet in appearance, setting the scene for all the intrigue that follows. Subtle scents of tobacco leaf and tea tree greet you, tangled with licks of freshly ground caraway seed, clove and anise. Wet earth and sweet composting vegetation come to mind, transcending you to a place deep within a temperate rainforest.

This wine has a boisterous zing of par-cooked rhubarb alongside forest berries and fragrant strawberry gum, shifting the nose to something less savoury. Combine the earthiness of cocoa powder and red fruits – highlighted by amarena cherry; a black forest gateau!

Strawberries and barely ripe raspberries swirl about the palate, joined by a hint of bay leaf and a kick of exotic pepper. Plucky, youthful tannins give chalkiness to the wine, while a racy acidity akin to pomegranate seed bursts effortlessly. There is a concentration to this wine, a density that keeps it pretty, plump and endearing.

A spring wine that instantly transports you to a breezy, brisk afternoon picnic with friends. The grass is still green, not yet seared by the fierce summer sun.

Pair with a vat of slowly-stewed Caponata, lifted with a dash of white wine vinegar and a drizzle of olive oil at the table with crusty bread.

DDS review

Earthy notes and a hint of game mingle with cherry/plum aromas, twigs and boysenberry. It's bright and medium bodied fruit, with soft, super fine tannins and a bit of a wild edge. The sweet and savoury flavours working in easy lock-step. Should make Gamay fans as happy as can be. - Different Drop Wine Team
