About the Wine

Justin McNamee playing for a classically Spanish-inspired style of Graciano from his 2017 release.

McNamee looks to the old world for inspiration in all his wines, the Graciano walks that path well. It shows the vibrant acidity and food-friendliness that has made this such a popular wine style.

It's firm with tannin but bright with fruit, a 'Joven' style and a tasty take on this wonderful Mediterranean variety.

This wine is loved by Justin's mailing list and as such is only available for a limited time.

About Samuel's Gorge

Samuel’s Gorge is one of McLaren Vale’s best-kept secrets. There, in his quiet neck of the woods, owner/winemaker Justin McNamee is on a mission to build “wines that are distinctly Australian with reference to the old world for texture, complexity and harmony.”

The Samuel's Gorge wines may be scarcely available but they are highly renowned. Shiraz and Grenache are considered his fortè, but he makes stellar examples of Tempranillo, Graciano, Gamay and more.  Justin works with some of McLaren Vale's top vineyards, preferring to entrust the region's top growers to do what they do best, while he concentrates on crafting the wines together and greeting customers at his much-loved cellar door.

These are wines with a distinct personality and a rustic feel, from an adored cult SA producer.

DDS review

Red fruit and cracked pepper, smoked meats, some citrus peel and an earthy, baked terracotta smell. Rhubarb and a touch of leafiness, it's bright and juicy with some taught, tight tannin. Screams prosciutto and olives and big glasses and sunshine. Delish. - Different Drop Wine Team

Additional Info

From The Producer

Graciano is a Spanish variety generally used in Tempranillo-based blends from Rioja. The vines are typically low yielding but the wine that it produces shows a pronounced peppery nose with bright acid and chewy tannin. This vintage marks the fourth release of Samuel’s Gorge Graciano. As our vineyard finds its feet, the ‘17 Graciano has extra layers of complexity, is evermore delicate and finely honed.

Opening with a bouquet of liquorice root and sour cherry, the wine quickly evolves, showing dried mandarin peel, plum, and blackberry pastille. The fruit flavours twist through glittering acidity on the palate while white pepper, coriander seed and savoury spice develop. It is, at its core, textural and expressive; creamy yet bright; bold but long lasting; vivacious and alluring.

Pair with pork sausage spiked with wild fennel taken from its casing and crumbled through plump gnocchi with lashings of fresh chilli and pecorino.
