About The Wine
This wine may be John Hughes' crowning achievement with the Riesling variety to date.
Inspired by the near-perfect vintage conditions of the 2017 season, Hughes embarked on his most ambitious winemaking project to date. A parcel of fruit was isolated from the White Hutt vineyard, owned by Richard and Anne Hughes, in the Clare Valley. John then whole-bunch pressed the fruit, fermented it wild and aged it in a singular 1500L foudre.
This is the way many of the great Rieslings of Germany are crafted. It's John's tip of the cap to these great winemaking traditions. The wine itself is as powerful, concentrated and multifaceted as any Australian Riesling we have tried.
A producer with a single-minded varietal focus is a rarity in Australian wine, John Hughes is one of those rarities.
John was born on an old Riesling vineyard in his home of the Clare Valley. To this day he produces some of South Australia's most articulate expressions of Riesling as his sole winemaking mission.
The wines show exquisite purity and elegance and sit comfortably among the best examples that South Australia has to offer.
