About The Wine

Tim Shand has done some excellent things with the Punt Road range since taking the reins. Pumping his energy and skill through every vein in the brand. This is the latest exciting develop on his watch. Tim takes on Yarra Valley Gamay with a vengeance. The vines were grafted over from Viognier in 2014.

The grapes were fermented as two separate batches: the first de-stemmed and fermented as whole berries as is the custom in the variety's spiritual home in Beaujolaise, the second was kept as 100% whole bunches for added structure and complexity.

Intelligent winemaking, here. The finished wine is just a pleasure to drink.

The 2017 vintage was close to perfect ripening conditions for Gamay on the Punt Road vineyard. With 93 points from Gary Walsh, this release is a step up in quality from the inaugural 2016 vintage. It is undeniably delicious to the last drop.

Critic Reviews

The Wine Front

"Ripe cherry and spice, meat rolled in dried herb, fleshy full and juicy, a bit of fresh strawberry tang and a dusting of fine powdery tannin. Bursts with dark cherry flavour on its long finish. A wonderful thing to drink. Bravo Timbo." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Additional Info

From The Producer

This is our second time around for Gamay and we’ve learnt a lot in 12 months. Lesson number 1 is that crop thinning is especially important. Gamay will set a big crop, with big bunches and big berries and it needs to be thinned hard, 30% went on the ground.

Lesson number 2: Bunches and bags. With those big berries, and in a benevolent year like ‘17, Gamay would have a tendency to be one dimensional. A  50:50 blend of 100% whole bunch ferments, and 100% carbonic maceration berry ferments in one of our infamous 1000l goon bags seems to best express the charm of this variety.

Blend : Gamay (100%)
ABV : 13.5%
Closure : Screw cap
