About The Wine

If you are on the hunt for a lighter and more unique expression of Grenache, the Rookie from Danish-born Uffe Daniel is going to be just what you've been looking for.

This is a fascinating Grenache. It's in the crisper, more fine-boned style of Grenache being popularised by the vanguard of McLaren Vale producers.

The key difference here is the wine's unique perfume; a storm of amaro and crushed herb notes amongst the just ripe cherry fruit profile.

With only 800 bottles made, this is a wine you will have to pounce on if you want to experience the wares of this fascinating young producer.

About Poppelvej

Poppelvej (pronounced 'Pop-ell-vee') is a pint-sized winery based in McLaren Vale started by young Danish sommelier-turned-winemaker, Uffe Deichmann with the help of his brother Jens.

The name Poppelvej translates to "the street of the poplar trees", a homage to the family home property of the same name.

Uffe now has a small, ramshackle winery dug into in the side of a hill in McLaren Vale. He produces tiny amounts of wine with a minimal intervention philosophy.

Low amounts of sulphur (but always some) are used, the ferments are all wild. Massive black concrete eggs and an array of oak vessels in varying sizes are used as fermenters. It's a small but love-filled operation he is running.

DDS review

Explosive perfume from this Grenache. Red fruit and a riot of amaro, sweet herbs and an intense negroni-like top note. The fruit is light and über refreshing. Crisp, chiseled tannin and dazzling acidity with a combination of poached strawberry and tart white cherry. Cracking wine. So moreish and compelling drinking. Great debut release from Uffe. - Different Drop Wine Team

From The Producer

25% whole bunch, natural fermentation and extended maceration for 3 weeks. This fruit was handpicked and matured on lees in stainless steel tank for 9 months, no oak is used. This wine is not your typical grenache, the grenache grape is a delicate and thin skinned grape and we like to treat it that way.

Blend : Grenache (100%)
Closure : Cork
Drink Until : 2022
