2017 Poggio Scalette Il Carbonaione

Tuscany, Italy

Old-vine Tuscan Sangiovese, with a wicked combination of florals, fruits and tar that burst from the glass with juicy purity.

About This Wine

From 90-year-old vines in the Carbonaione vineyard near Ruffoli, this Sangiovese is a wine that truly conveys a sense of place, with the deep-seated vines soaking up the richness of Tuscany.

Elegant and generous, well balanced in every small nuance, “Il Carbonaione” is as true a vineyard expression as you can find. Conceived by proprietor Vittorio Fiore, it’s the culmination of long years studying and gaining experience. A Sangiovese that combines power and refinement in a single sip. The nose reveals a vast bouquet, preserved berries, overripe cherry, leather, coffee, and floral perfume.

The palate is full-bodied, pleasantly savoruy with length, and has a tannin profile that will whisper sweet nothings to you for decades to come.

About Podere Poggio Scalette

The story begins in 1991 when renowned oenologist Vittorio Fiore, took over an abandoned deceased estate in the heart of Chianti Classico.

On a large 40 ha parcel of land, there are only 15 ha of vines - as is the tradition of Tuscan estates they have an entire eco-system. Tuscan romanticism made real; sweeping hills, wooded forests, and olive-groves all in harmony with the beautifully manicured vineyards of the region.

Their vineyards; the first vines planted post-WWI, are now some of, if not the oldest vines in Tuscany. This stewardship is of vital importance to Vittorio.

He is unanimously considered one of the architects of the renewal and success of viticulture in Tuscany, and with his son Jurij now running the business, the precious stewardship of these old-vines will remain a family mission with the next generation as well.

Expert Reviews

Critic Reviews

"Owned by renowned oenologist Vittorio Fiore, who purchased the abandoned property in 1991. Il Carbonaione is the estate's oldest vineyard with 90-year-old vines planted on a steep terraced hillside in Ruffoli. Dark cherry, lavender and violet are infused with hints of tar. This is fruit-laden but pure, with an underlying juicy citrus note and velvety tannins. Finishes with sweet baking spice and vanilla." - Michaela Morris (Decanter)

"A creamy, ripe-tannined red with chocolate, berry, light vanilla and cappuccino character and a solid core of fruit and polished tannins. It’s full-bodied and well crafted. Better after 2022, when it will all come together." -
