About the Wine

I am the Owl is an edgy wine.

Like its namesake song from cult hero band Dead Kennedys, this Syrah has a certain energy to it that is undeniable.

According to Taras, the organically farmed vineyard for the Owl is set deep into loamy soils that mean he never needs to irrigate. He just lets the vineyard do its own thing each year and pick when he thinks it's good to go. 100% whole bunches too.

This is such an interesting style of Syrah. It's sleek and slender but still with lovely mid-palate weight, all sorts of floral, spicy, mineral characters and a certain wildness about it that makes it hard to look away.

About Ochota Barrels

The term “rockstar winemaker” gets thrown around a lot these days but Taras Ochota, owner/purveyor of cult wine label Ochota Barrels, is the real deal.

His grungy, minimalist attitude towards his label has seen him gain huge cult status internationally as one of the most boundary pushing “conceptual” winemakers in Australia. From his home in the beautiful Basket Range of the Adelaide Hills, Taras and his wife Amber craft small batches of wine from surrounding vineyards in the Hills and special sites across McLaren Vale and the Barossa Valley.

These are highly sought after and extremely limited wines which have a pulsating energy and drive to them. Some of the country's most exciting wines, no doubt.

"Elevated demi-glace reduction notes refrain to bergamont infused black cherry, Dutch licorice and fennel frond. The palate’s entry has a ferrous, mineral like texture with a savoury butcher shop/gun flint element wrapped around a succulent blood plum core. Espresso bean, white pepper, florals and cordite poke their noses in too. Long, lithe and tightly wound with a voluptuous lump of mid palate depth." - Taras Ochota
