2017 Nocturne Cabernet Sauvignon

Margaret River, WA

Julian Langworthy is one of the country's finest winemakers and this is up there with his best work. Seriously good Margaret River Cabernet here.

I am as happy with this Cabernet as any I have been involved in making.

About The Wine

Nocturne is the private label of husband and wife winemaking team Julian and Alana Langworthy.

Julian has received plenty of attention since taking home the 2016 Jimmy Watson Trophy for his work on the Deep Woods Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, but it's this collaboration with Alana which is the winemaking project closest to his heart.

The pair recently obtained a mature Cabernet vineyard in Yallingup, from which they are striving to create elegant, regional Cabernet Sauvignon of premium quality. The 2017 vintage is fine and medium-bodied, supple and incredibly approachable yet will mature beautifully over the medium to long term.

This wine should be on the hit list for every devotee of Margaret River Cabernet.

About Nocturne

Nocturne is the personal side label of highly decorated Margaret River winemaker Julian Langworthy and his wife Alana.

Julian has won just about everything there is to win in Australian wine, having taken out Winemaker of the Year for the 2019 Halliday Wine Companion, the 2016 Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy at Royal Melbourne in the space of just a couple of years.

The Nocturne wines are all small production with Julian focusing on quality rather than quantity in this range.

The fruit is procured through Julian's connections with local growers developed over his lifetime in the Margaret River region. If you're looking for hidden gems of Margaret River, the Nocturne wines are it.

Critic Reviews

DDS review

Effortless Cabernet with a distinct regional accent. Bayleaves, violets, cassis and firm, persistent tannin. It's a lovely wine to drink now with deep pools of open and inviting fruit mesh beautifully to some top quality oak. Just a tick over medium bodied, now or with a few years under its belt this is great drinking. - Different Drop Wine Team

From The Producer

Wow, this was the vintage that nearly wasn’t. We had almost 10 days of rain and close to 100mm during the ripening period; we were worried that we wouldn’t pick any fruit at all. Fortunately the sun came out and shone for a month straight and we enjoyed almost perfect ripening conditions. With the sun, however, came the kangaroos and birds. They took more than their fair share of fruit and we spent every morning and evening chasing roos from the vineyard. The kids loved it but we can’t say we did overly.

Finally the fruit was picked on 6th March, the first Cabernet fruit picked that year. At the time it was slightly worrying as the fruit, while exhibiting lovely light flavours and ripe tannins, had quite low potential alcohol. We needed not be concerned as after only a few days on skins this wine began to shine and revealed itself as a medium-bodied silky tannin-bearing beauty.

The fruit was simply destemmed and fermented in 4.5-tonne static fermenters. After 12 days on skins and a peak ferment temperature of around 25 degrees Celsius, the wine was pressed to tank and settled briefly, before being transferred to a combination of new (25%) and two-year-old barrels to undergo malolactic conversion. This wine was racked only once in this time and, after 15 months in oak, was emptied from barrel, settled, clarified and bottled.

The Sheoak vineyard makes expressive, medium-bodied Cabernets that bear some semblance to a modern version of luncheon claret. I am as happy with this Cabernet as any I have been involved in making. While it’s amazingly accessible on release, two to three years’ further maturation will really make this amazing wine shine.
