About the Wine

Nick Spencer's first release of Tumbarumba Gruner Veltliner is excellent. It comes from the oldest vineyard in the Tumbarumba region, planted in 1993 at 650 above sea level. The cool temperatures and the old volcanic soils on this site make it the ideal location for this Austrian variety.

Nick's taken the fruit, pressed it to a mixture of stainless steel and older oak and bottled it after two months on lees. The barrel time and the short time on lees amping up the mouthfeel of this typically crisp variety.

Nick's move towards a gentler winemaking hand paying dividends with the delicacy of Gruner. It's a delicious rendition and one that's sure to be incredibly popular with fans of the grape.

About Nick Spencer Wines

Nick Spencer made a name for himself after a hugely successful decade-long stint as chief winemaker at Eden Road, before deciding in 2017 to take the plunge and start his very own label. The Nick Spencer wines are, like Eden Road's, focused on the regions of the NSW High Country, in particular Tumbarumba and Gundagai.

With Nick's access to some of the region's best fruit, his wines are all about balance, style and drinkability, with Nick's stamp of quality on top. Tiny volumes made and an exciting producer to watch out for!

"It has that signature radish and white pepper top note over apple and peach, some spicy biscuit and hazelnut. Light bodied, plenty of spice and a twist of pink grapefruit keeping it fresh and cool, fine acidity and a subtle dusty/white pepper texture, apple drizzled with lemon on the finish, which is fairly long, leaving spice and cool acidity in its wake. It’s subtle, some might think a little dilute, but I think transparent and clear. Needs another year in bottle to start showing its best side, I reckon. Good Grüner." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Vineyard

SOURCED FROM A SINGLE VINEYARD IN TUMBARUMBA AT 650 METERS ABOVE SEA LEVEL. THE VINES ARE GROWN IN DECOMPOSED VOLCANIC SOIL. THE VINEYARD IS THE OLDEST VINEYARD IN THE REGION PLANTED IN 1993 MAKING THE VINES 24 YEARS OLD. 

Winemaking

LIGHTLY PRESSED TO THREE SEPERATE VESSELS FOR FERMENTATION. 1000 LITRE FOUDRE, 500 LITRE NEW OAK PUNCHEON AND THE BALANCE IN STAINLESS STEEL. ALL FERMENTED WITH INDIGENOUS YEAST WITHOUT SETTLING. THE SEPERATE BATCHES WERE THEN BLENDED TOGETHER AFTER 2 MONTHS ON LEES IN THE FOUDRE AND PUNCHEON. BOTTLED IN JUNE 2017.

2017 WAS A SUPERB VINTAGE CHARACTERISED BY HEALTHY SPRING RAINFALL AND PERFECT EVEN RIPENING CONDITIONS THROUGH TO AUTUMN.

We ship primarily with Australia Post. Their fast, easy and reliable delivery is completely FREE for any orders of $150 or more, or just $9 for any orders of $149 or less. There is no minimum order quantity and you can mix and match as much as you like.

The vast majority of orders are dispatched from our Sydney warehouse on the same or next business day. Estimated delivery time frames can be viewed here. Please include Authority to Leave instructions in the ‘SPECIAL REQUESTS’ box during checkout if you may not be available to sign for your delivery and would like it left at your front door.
