About The Wine

Brothers Matthew and Jonathan Hughes are Tasmanian stars on the rise.

Their Mewstone wines come from their small plot in the South of the island, a former cherry orchard planted to Pinot Noir and a smattering of Chardonnay, Sauvignon, and Riesling.

The 2017 release of Chardonnay is a ripper. Full flavoured with an intense drive through the mouth, this is a Chardonnay that really packs a punch. It has presence and panache, it has style and finesse.

The quality of Tasmanian wine seems on an unstoppable upward trajectory. It's wines like this that make Tas one of the most exciting wine regions in the country.

Only 42 dozen made.

About Mewstone

Mewstone Wines is a joint venture between Jonny and Matt Hughes, two Tasmanian born wine-heads, and their respective wives Margie and Cathie.

The two families have invested in a small plot of land on the banks of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel in the charmingly named locality of Flowerpot, on the south-eastern tip of Tasmania. Matt works the grapes, Jonny makes the wines, taking what he learnt from seven years as assistant winemaker at Moorilla and re-imagining it for his own label.

The Hughes & Hughes wines offer some of the best value to be found in Tasmania at the moment, and the Mewstone premium range focuses on exception single-vineyard wines made in a style that Jonny wants to drink.

James Halliday called them, "an utterly exceptional wine producer". Keep an eye on this ambitious pair as their star continues to rise.

Critic Reviews

DDS review

This is a powerful Chardonnay. Apple and grapefruit, stonefruit and a dab of cream. The chalkiness, the minearlity all wound up with a perfectly pitched cradle of spicy oak in support. It goes long through the finish. The acidity is gorgeous. Such great flow too. Delicious Chardonnay. - Different Drop Wine Team
