About The Wine

If you've been keeping track of Australia's best alternative variety wines of the last few years, this should already be on your hit list.

The Mayford Tempranillo may well be Australia's most consistently excellent Tempranillo. Grown on a small vineyard in Porepunkah in the Alpine Valleys, Eleana Anderson and Bryan Nicholson are the couple responsible for this benchmark wine.

It's the undeniable power and structure of the wine that truly sets it apart.

This is a benchmark wine and the 2017 looks to be one of Eleana's best to date. If you want to see how good Australian Tempranillo can be, this is the best place to start.

About Mayford

Mayford has been a work in progress since 1995, now they are one of the leading producers in the Alpine Valley. Setting the bar high, are Eleana Anderson and Bryan Nicholson. Very high indeed.

They only produce four wines from their bucolic estate; Chardonnay, Shiraz, one of the country’s best Tempranillo and a blend of Tempranillo and Cabernet which shows immense promise.

Bryan tends the vines, Eleana makes the wines. From the vine to the bottle, this couple do it all themselves. Small batches of wine with only quality in mind.

A jewel in the crown for the Alpine Valleys and Porepunkah region.

From The Producer

Viticulture & Winemaking

Small parcels were hand-picked and cold soaked prior to natural ferment as separate batches in open pots. Some parcels saw a percentage of stalk and whole bunch inclusion and others, extended maceration. Barrel maturation was in a range of French cooperages for twelve months on malo lees for texture and complexity.

Tasting Note

It is earthy and dark with black cherry, beetroot, crushed herb, carob and spice aromas. It has plush red fruits, good depth and flavor intensity and a juiciness and relatively soft tannins that make it more approachable as a young wine than many Mayford releases. Limited volumes.

Blend : Tempranillo (100%)

Critic Reviews

The Wine Front

"The Mayford reds always creep up on me. I start out liking them and end up loving them. This is bold, ripe and forward at first, a little bombastic even, which is all very well but it had me thinking 92-93 if you know what I mean. And then. As I sat with the wine its motor really started to purr, the undercarriage, the drifts of herbs, cloves and smoky oak, the rumble of licoricey tannin. It hits but then it spreads. The final impression is one of completeness and of command. You can drink it now, it has it all going on. But boy does this have a future." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Halliday Wine Companion

"Deep purple-red; dark red fruits, licorice root with a hint of bitumen, earthy and menthol, this is savoury through and through, concentrated yet the tannins are detailed, the length goes on and on. There's a feeling, and aromas, of substantial oak, all should settle in time. Convincingly impressive and built for the long haul." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

Delivery times vary considerably with Australia Post and unfortunately there is no Express Delivery Option for wine (because it is fragile and heavy). Strict government health and safety requirements and very high parcel volumes are causing significant backlogs at the main NSW and VIC sorting facilities. Orders are still arriving safe and sound but you may notice slower delivery times and less frequent scanning updates than usual.

I am trying to add more of a wine to my cart but it won’t let me? This means we are running low on stock of that wine.
