About The Wine

Eleana and Bryan at Mayford in Porepunkah produce some of the finest boutique wines in the Alpine Valleys.

Their small vineyard in Porepunkah consistently produces fruit of epic intensity and pure class.

The 2017 growing season was long and cool and the quality of fruit it produced was outstanding.

This is a classic cool-climate Shiraz that shows beautiful blue and black fruits against a background of woody spices and papper.

It's a brilliant example of Victorian Shiraz that has been perfectly realised by Eleana. Kudos.

About Mayford

Mayford has been a work in progress since 1995, it is now considered one of the leading producers in the Alpine Valley. Setting the bar high, are Eleana Anderson and Bryan Nicholson. Very high indeed.

They only produce four wines from their bucolic estate; Chardonnay, Shiraz, one of the country’s best Tempranillo and a blend of Tempranillo and Cabernet which shows immense promise.

Bryan tends the vines, Eleana makes the wines. From the vine to the bottle, this couple do it all themselves. Small batches of wine with only quality in mind.

A jewel in the crown for the Alpine Valleys and Porepunkah region.

From The Producer

The 2017 vintage was hailed across the north east of Victoria as the “vintage of the decade”. (Mind you, that was before the spectacular 2018 vintage came along!) Good winter and spring rainfall restored river flows and replenished underground water systems, leading into a cool and dry summer without massive temperature extremes. The mild conditions continued into autumn, enabling grapes to ripen slowly and fully but without accumulating unduly high sugar levels.

Across the board, harvest at Mayford was three weeks later than a “normal” year, producing beautifully pure-fruited, finely structured and super elegant wines. The Shiraz was no exception.

In the 2017 vintage the results of our extensive clonal diversification programme (which commenced in 2011) can be clearly seen. The Mayford vineyard currently has 14 different clones of Shiraz planted, many of which are hard-to-come-by heritage clones. Each brings a different expression of the variety and contributes complexity and interest to the overall blend. In general terms, the new clonal plantings give perfume and fragrance- the original 25 year-old Shiraz block bringing maturity, depth and power.

Small parcels were selectively hand-picked over the last three weeks of March 2017 and vinified separately according to clone and harvest date. Each batch was chilled and cold soaked prior to spontaneous fermentation by indigenous yeasts. With so many small ferments, no winemaker can resist the opportunity to trial and compare, thus each batch had varying times on skins, percentages of whole berry/bunch, degrees of post ferment maceration and of course a diverse range of cooperages. Oak maturation was in French barriques for 22 months, 30% new.

The Wine Front

"Beautifully crafted wine. Filligreed tannin is the key to its quality but the spread of flavour is the source of the seduction. Black cherry into plum, toast and chicory, a suggestion of peppercorn and a subtle creaminess. Oak is certainly in play but overall the wine feels both balanced and confident. It’s another fantastic release from the gem that is Mayford." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

"Testament to the site and skill of the winemaker when a vintage doesn't play fair - a hailstorm effectively reduced the crop load by half, but quality is up there. Excellent colour similar to Chanel rouge-noir nail polish; dark fruits, warm earth, woodsy spices plus oak flavour all meshing well. This has power and drive across the full-bodied palate, determined tannins, but it's also balanced and detailed." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)
