About The Pack

The 2017 releases from Roger Pike at Marius are marvellous.

He has released four wines from the 2017 season - his two iconic Shiraz: Symphony & Simpatico; the Matarius Mataro and the cryptic End Play red. These four wines showcase one of  McLaren Vale's most singular producers.

The Shiraz both show superb depth and structure. While the fruit sits lively and accessible in the glass right now, the rocky, chiselled tannin that is unique to Shiraz from this site stands as a constant reminder that time will be very kind to these rare beauties. The Mataro and the End Play are only released in certain years when Roger is happy with the fruit quality. Suffice to say, he likes what he sees in the 2017s - as did Mike Bennie and Gary Walsh at The Wine Front who have both given rave reviews for these wines on release.

This pack is strictly limited and will not last long.

2017 Marius Symphony Shiraz

The Symphony is the finest, richest, most powerful Shiraz from the middle section of the Marius vineyard in McLaren Vale.

This wine shows imperious strength. It's the kind of wine that booms out across the room thumping its fist, loudly proclaiming its place of origin. The rare red gravels on the Marius vineyard impart a quality to the grapes like no other site in Australia. Owner/proprietor Roger Pike does is coaxes this individual character into the glass with a deft touch.

If you want a wine that is going to look brilliant in 20+ years, this remarkable wine should be on your list for a number of reasons - not least of which is the incredible value it offers.

Wine Front Review: - 96 points

"It’s a glossy wine of gentle spread in the palate, a sigh across the tongue, and with it the cavalcade of strong, fresh, dark cherry juice, garrigue spice, brambly-undergrowth character, light but regal cedar and, importantly, bergamot tea-laced webs of fine tannin. There’s an almost rose hip tea element in the wine too; I kept searching and seeking. There’s something more firm and filigreed about this wine than the gruntier (relatively) 2017 Simpatico, a distant relative of nebbiolo here, let’s say. It’s the one I want to drink more of, just, but the perceived quality between the two, for me, is equal. You’ll meet this one again in twenty year-plus too." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

2017 Marius Simpatico Shiraz

The Simpatico is sourced from the Shiraz vines on the outer perimeter of the Marius vineyard.

Typically, the Simpatico will drink a little younger than the more hefty Symphony cuvee. It's a slightly racier, more streamlined iteration of Shiraz, with spice and a crunchiness a feature alongside the emphatic density that singles out the Shiraz wines from this unique site.

It's a wine of great character and offers incredible value for money. Only a small amount is available such is the ferverish hunger for Roger Pike's wines. To get a taste of Marius, there is no better place to start.

Wine Front Review: - 96 points

"So harmonious, so much detail and thrust. Someone walked into my tasting space and spat “who ate dark chocolate?” and I looked down at my glass and up at them. Chocolate and a mesh of berries on brambles. Clove and black jelly bean. Just over medium weight, concentrated and inky, slides on rails of fine, lithe tannins, brisk with its acidity and sculpted along its long trajectory through the palate. The finish is fresh. It’s a pitch-perfect fuller flavoured wine of beauty and quiet power." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

2017 Marius Matarius Mataro

Wine Front Review: - 93 points

"There’s a soupiness to this wine, but not in that loose-knit, young fresh, un-evolved way that some winemakers bring to play through lo-fi winemaking. No. Not like that. Like the sheen of fine consommé with just a little burr. The wine slips around the palate gently but with dark, brooding mixed berry flavours, a touch of bitter dark chocolate in the mix, some faint pleasing nuttiness. The lot’s shot through with Chinese five spice. It’s a lovely feel here, moodier than most mataro, grumpy even, though the texture takes you somewhere else. Good drinking." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

2017 Marius End Play

Wine Front Review: - 93 points

"Thick set thing of old school rendition. A wine for the front bar but quite a bit classier. Stewed but fresh forest berry fruits, strong liquorice character, salt bush, Aussie bush, a lick of mint and breathy clove, and, tobacco to finish. Rich juiciness, tannins gummy and ashy at once. Bold, dark red wine aromas with more smoke, old spice cupboard and greenery amongst that brooding plummy stuff. Honest red. A hearty red. For thick-rim wine glasses and drinking in two gulps before sloshing to RSL pour level and, well, maybe a poker night not an afternoon of bridge." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
