About The Wine
The modern Australian Shiraz/Syrah is a much different beast to that of twenty years ago. Thank the wine gods for the evolution of style, it's allowed for great wines like this to come into existence.
Hamish Young has got a good eye for fruit. For this fresh, nouveau take on Syrah, he sourced from a vineyard he describes as "Possibly the warmest, hungriest site in Canberra." It was fermented as 100% whole berries for max aromatics, cold soaked for a week, fermented for two weeks, then pressed to a combination of ceramic egg and a French puncheon.
There's also a dash of Grenache co-fermented with Gewürztraminer thrown in for a little extra 'pop'. Of this vintage, Hamish says - "this is brighter, more detailed and crunchier than last year's - it's what I want the wine to be." This is a highly perfumed, exuberant style of Syrah, which is reliant on impeccable fruit for its appeal, not oak. If you love the trend towards medium-bodied, youthful reds, this is going to be right up your alley.
About Mada Wines
Mada wines sees ex-Eden Road operational winemaker Hamish Young venture out on his own for the first time.
Sourcing fruit from some great sites across the Canberra and Hilltops regions, his first releases were a smash hit and his star continues to rise.
His wines show a fresher and more modern side of NSW wine, all about vibrant fruit and ease of drinking. He looks for texture in his aromatic whites, freshness in his delightful red wines, each release sees him refine his own 'house style' a little more.
This is a Canberra producer to watch for the future - one of the new crop shaking up the regional scene.
As Mike Bennie once said, "Mada Wines should be put on your list of wines to watch, or indeed to buy a bit of....then probably a lot of."
