This was the vineyard I fell in love with and most wanted to own.

Steve Pannell, Owner/Winemaker

About The Wine

The Koomilya project is Steve Pannell's "proudest accomplishment in wine."

This single block in McLaren Vale holds a special place in his heart, being the main source of his first Jimmy Watson Trophy winning wine, the 1995 Eileen Hardy Shiraz. On top of that, Steve has a certain spiritual connection to this site, "Out of the hundreds of vineyards I have visited around the world, this was the vineyard I fell in love with and most wanted to own."

Now as the custodian of this vineyard, Steve is releasing superb single vineyard wines from this block. It's his best attempt to distill this special site into a bottle. The 2017 Shiraz is stunning. A pure and powerful example of premium McLaren Vale Shiraz.

What's inside these bottles is magnificent, this is surely the making of a future icon wine for this region.

About S.C. Pannell

Quite simply, Stephen Pannell is one of Australia’s finest and most imaginative winemakers. He’s a Jimmy Watson Trophy winner, a McLaren Vale Bushing King winner, a two-time Max Schubert Trophy winner, International Red Winemaker of the Year and Decanter Magazine’s 50 Most Influential Contributors to the World of Wine. Nick Stock described him as potentially “one of the greatest Australian winemakers ever to make wines in our age”.

Steve’s wines are made with modern Australian food and wine culture at the front of mind. The wines come from a range of stunning McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills vineyards, and are made from sustainable varieties that properly suit his South Australian climate.  They're built around brightness of fruit and savoury tannin structure, and whatever your poison is Steve has you covered!

He is truly one of the most forward thinking and inspirational Australian winemakers alive today.

From The Producer

AROMAS

Blackberry and bramble ll the room on removing the cap. There is nothing shy about the red wine aromas that smell unmistakably of Koomilya; freshly cut red wood, mahogony, iodine and liquorice

PALATE

Cool on entry with a nice ow of dark fruit to the back of the palate where tannins kick in, supple and supportive. The backbone of acidity keeps all in check. Mid weight and carefree speaking clearly of Upper Tintara Shiraz.

Blend : Shiraz (100%)
ABV : 14%
Closure : Screw Cap
Drink Until : 2050+
Bottle Size : 750ml

Critic Reviews

The Wine Front

"Blackberry, liquorice, rock pool and oyster shells, warm scents of polished wood with a little nougat and sizzled sage leaf in tow. Medium-bodied, kind of wants to be full-bodied, but keeps itself sensible. Blackberry and raspberry coulis, but then something of a veal with capers and black olives savoury thing happening (don’t mind me), tannin is supple and has a sort of wool feel, and the finish is earthy and saline, and satisfyingly long. Distinctive. It recalls that comforting feeling of reading a favourite book for the second (or third) time in your favourite chair. Lovely." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Halliday Wine Companion

"From one small section (known as the GT block) of a prized vineyard in the Upper Tintara subregion of McLaren Vale, now in the hands of Steve Pannell. 16% whole bunch, wild ferment, 20% new oak in the maturation cycle. This is a most distinctive shiraz in the greater regional context, exuding a powerful mix of black fruits with the smells of Australian bush enveloping the fruits. The palate is dense, not with oak but with rich, savoury licorice and definite earthy, mossy, roasted root vegetable notes in there as well. And with all that, there's still a medium-bodied flow through the mouth. Which should be open in awe at the exit because of how astoundingly good this wine is!" - Tony Love (Halliday Wine Companion)

Delivery times vary considerably with Australia Post and unfortunately there is no Express Delivery Option for wine (because it is fragile and heavy). Strict government health and safety requirements and very high parcel volumes are causing significant backlogs at the main NSW and VIC sorting facilities. Orders are still arriving safe and sound but you may notice slower delivery times and less frequent scanning updates than usual.
