Pretty wine of high drinkability and some good intensity. Great drinking, great character.

About The Wine

The Koerner Riesling is grown on the Koerner family vineyard, Gullyview, in Watervale, Clare Valley.

This vineyard has been farmed by the Koerners for 35 years, the sons Damon and Jonathan are intimate with the fruit and it shows. This is Watervale Riesling with more character and texture than the 'classic' styles of wine the region is famous for.

The fruit was fermented in a combination of stainless and ceramic egg, spent 12 hours on skins and goes to the bottle with no fining, filtering or additions apart from a smidge of sulphur. It has texture and vitality and a load of interest.

Mike Bennie awarded it 93 points and called it, "Pretty wine of high drinkability and some good intensity."

A new look at a staple of the Australian wine landscape by a family owned operation. Great stuff.

About Koerner

The Koerner brothers, Damon and Jono, are on a mission to bring the classic wine styles of the Clare Valley into the modern day.

They play with a mix of 'classic' Clare Valley varieties such as Riesling, Cabernet and Malbec and a suite of alternate varieties that show a different side of this iconic Australian wine region.

With fruit sourced from their own family vineyard and a move toward more contemporary winemaking, utilising terracotta and ceramic for fermenting and making as little additions as possible in the winery, it's easy to see why their star is on the rise.

As Mike Bennie recently wrote, "Some of the most interesting, delicious wines in Australia are emerging, and the reinvention and sexing up of Clare Valley is apparent."

Additional Info

From The Producer

The Riesling fruit used to produce this wine was grown on a South East slope at the Northern end of the Gullyview Vineyard. The vines are 17 years old and planted on red clay on limestone, ‘Terra Rosa’ soil.

We hand picked over 2 days, a week apart, the first pick was the 3rd Febuary, the second pick on the 10th. In the winery half the fruit was pressed straight away, the other half received 24 hours of skin contact and received a small sulphur add in the press tray. All juice was cold settled for a few days and racked off dirt, fine solids were kept for ferment. Natural ferment was carried out in a mix of ceramic eggs, stainless steel tanks and barrique barrels; and lasted for around three weeks.

The wine was racked off ferment and lees and then spent 5 months on fine lees in stainless steel. Prior to bottling a small sulphur addition was made, the wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered.

"Definitive grapefruit spectrum riesling. Scents of citrus pith, citrus blossoms, that freshness from a just-cut grapefruit. Light and lean in the palate, mouthwatering acidity, a little bite and grip in texture. Fresh as, refreshing as. Pretty wine of high drinkability and some good intensity. Great drinking, great character."- Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
