About The Wine

'The Clare' is the Koerner brothers' idea of a modern Clare Valley red.

The base of this wine is a classic Clare Valley varietal marriage of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc, but contrary to what those varieties usually produce from the Clare, this is a lively, juicy red wine ready to be tucked into immediately.

It's the Clare Valley viewed through the eyes of two younger generation locals who want the wines of their home to be vibrant and accessible and they are nailing their mission.

About Koerner

The Koerner brothers, Damon and Jono, are on a mission to bring the classic wine styles of the Clare Valley into the modern day.

They play with a mix of 'classic' Clare Valley varieties such as Riesling, Cabernet and Malbec and a suite of alternate varieties that show a different side of this iconic Australian wine region.

With fruit sourced from their own family vineyard and a move toward more contemporary winemaking, utilising terracotta and ceramic for fermenting and making as little additions as possible in the winery, it's easy to see why their star is on the rise.

Critic Reviews

DDS review

Mint and blackberry and cassis, little plusher in style than the La Corse, sits in its own groove nicely. Note of red plumminess, and red berries, with a sour crunch of bright acidity and fine chompy tannins. Some savouriness in the back end too. Cool. Modern take on the old school Clare varieties. Nicely done. - Different Drop Wine Team

Additional Info

From The Producer

Numerous batches of fruit where sourced from Vivian, Attunga and Bass Hill Vineyards. The different batches where picked on various dates through out vintage.

In the winery the fruit was 100% destemmed, retaining as many whole berries as possiable. All fruit was fermented with indigenous yeast in open fermenters and hand plunged once or twice a day. Time on skins generally lasted two weeks before being pressed, settled in tank for a few days and then racked to ceramic egg or old oak, where it matured for 3 months.

The wine was then blended to tank where it sat on fine lees for a further 6 months. At this point a small sulphur addition was made and the wine was bottled without fining or filtration.
