About The Wine

Vermentino is one of those varieties that really shines with some skin contact and a few winemaking tricks. It adds an extra dimension of appeal.

Case in point is this Pigato Vermentino from Koerner wines in the Clare Valley. Vermentino was planted around 10 years ago on the family vineyard in Watervale, a pocket on Terra Rossa soils selected as best for this variety.

The wine spent three weeks on skins in concrete open vessels during fermentation before being pressed back to concrete and old oak. Bottled without filtering or filtration. It's a winning style, complete with slightly cloudy and grippy elements.

Curious and thirst quenching in equal parts.

About Koerner

The Koerner brothers, Damon and Jono, are on a mission to bring the classic wine styles of the Clare Valley into the modern day.

They play with a mix of 'classic' Clare Valley varieties such as Riesling, Cabernet and Malbec and a suite of alternate varieties that show a different side of this iconic Australian wine region.

With fruit sourced from their own family vineyard and a move toward more contemporary winemaking, utilising terracotta and ceramic for fermenting and making as little additions as possible in the winery, it's easy to see why their star is on the rise.

As Mike Bennie recently wrote, "Some of the most interesting, delicious wines in Australia are emerging, and the reinvention and sexing up of Clare Valley is apparent."

From The Producer

The Vermentino fruit used to produce this wine was sourced a slight northern aspect of Gullyview vineyard. The vines are 10 years old and planted on red clay on limestone, ‘Terra Rosa’ soil. We hand picked the fruit on the 11th of March at around 11.3 baume. I

n the winery the fruit was 100% de-stemmed and fermented in open fermenters for an average of 3 weeks. The ferments were hand plunged once a day before pressing. The wine was matured in stainless steel tanks on fine lees for 4 months. Prior to bottling the wine was racked and a small sulphur addition made. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered

"Koerner Pigato Rolle Favorita Vermentino. A bit of skin contact. Wonderful label design. Cloudy, but fine. Preserved lemon, smattering of herb, and a distinct flavour of ginger beer, although quite a dry one. Dusty and spicy, milky texture, then a saline flavour that’s almost like Gastrolyte, though I’m not sure drinking a bottle will keep you so well hydrated, but by all means feel free to try it. Very interesting wine. No shortage of personality." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
