About This Wine
With a 20-month elevage in a mix of French and American oak, this is a big and bold, old-school Aussie Shiraz.
It is everything you’d expect from a wine like this. Powerful flavours of berries, liquorice, leather, etc, all wrapped up on soft velvety oak characteristics that envelop you like a warm hug on a cold winters night.
Long and textured, the tannin integration here is exceptional. This is a wine that while evolved and drinking well now, still has another decade to grow evolve, and dare we say, get even better?
About Kay Brothers
Producing wine on their McLaren Vale estate since 1895, Kay Brothers (named as you would expect for founding brothers Fred and Bert Kay), are one of the oldest producers in the Vale.
With the 3rd generation of the family now managing the business, their growth has seen then expand to a much more corporate structure, helping to preserve their heritage vineyards.
with over 100 ha under vine, they are not a small producer by any means, yet they are still connected very much to their small family origins, with many of the original buildings (now heritage listed) and equipment close to 100 years old still in operation today.

The Hillside Shiraz allows Kay Brothers to pick various parcels of fruit so as to assemble the best blend possible. Block 11, located at the top of the hill, has shallow sandy loam soil over limestone and sandstone. These vines are very exposed to the wind and sun. As a consequence, the vines mature earlier in most years and tend to be low yielding, with intense fruit concentration and powerful tannins. The rest of the Hillside Shiraz is located farther down the hill, in New Block 6, where dark chocolate loam and clay soil dispersed with quartz and ironstone over silty limestone. The New Block 6 component provides the finesse and elegance to the overall blend with savoury flavours and tight structure. The blend of these two vineyards balances each other extremely well.

"If you can’t stretch the budget to Block 6, then Hillside is most often a pretty fair substitute. Blackcurrant, blackberry, liquorice and dark chocolate, discreet cedar spiced oak. It’s full bodied, and full of dark chocolate, roast beef and dried herb, dense in tannin, though not heavy. Finish is very good too, savoury and long. Excellent. Warehouse Pickupis available from our Sydney warehouse in Ultimo, 2007. Just select Local Pickup at checkout. We are open 8am to 4pm, Monday to Friday.

Do I have to order in dozens? No, please mix it up! You can order wines in any quantity and variation you like. You can order 1 bottle or 50. We challenge you to make the ultimate mixed pack of wine!
Are there volume discounts? No, our pricing is designed to be the best in market already - no marking up and then discounting down! For very large orders (weddings, etc) we are open to negotiating though. Just give us a call.
Do we price match? Yes, within reason. Everyday low & consistent pricing is something we strongly believe in. We want our customers to feel confident they are always getting the best price. If you see a price lower somewhere else let us know and we'll consider matching it. We'll even retrospectively issue you store credit if you have already purchased from us but you see a lower price somewhere later on. Our price match policy can be seen here.
Can coupons and discounts be stacked? No, only one discount or coupon can be applied to an order at once.
I am trying to add more of a wine to my cart but it won’t let me? This means we are running low on stock of that wine. So for example, if the website will only allow you to add 3 bottles and no more, then that is all we have of that particular wine. The good news is we may be able to order more for you. Just contact us on 02 8376 8775 or hello@differentdrop.com and we'll organise the additional quantity for you.
Does Different Drop have a physical store? No. Just an a warehouse/office. We occasionally do events however, so sign up to our newsletter or follow us on instagram to stay in the loop.
Can I special order a wine you do not sell? If it’s doable, then we’ll make it happen. Just contact us directly via phone, chat or email and we’ll find out for you right away. Please note that in most cases special orders such as these will need to be in full case lots (6 or 12 bottles).
