About the Wine

With Barolo fast becoming an expensive collectors’ wine, you’d think that there’s no longer high value treasures to be found.

Which is why Josetta Saffirio’s base model Barolo needs your attention. Energetic and expressive young winemaker, Sara Vezza, has captured this vintage beautifully.

Organically farmed, infused rather than extracted, she draws out the perfumed nature of Nebbiolo with great fragrance and finesse. Throw in the cute gnomes on the label painted by Sara’s mother Josetta, and you know you've hit some serious buried treasure!

About Josetta Saffirio

The tale of Josetta Saffirio, as with many Italian wineries, is one birthed from a rich family history.

In 1975, Josetta Saffirio's story begins - she starts taking care of the vineyards that her father purchased a few decades prior. She experiments crafting wines, eventually creating a unique Barolo that blows the socks off the wine industry - a real feat for her to have achieved at that time.

Now Josetta's daughter, Sara Vezza, has taken charge of the vineyard. She takes great pride in working in unison with the land, saying "wine is a life force, rich in micro-organisms that allow it to evolve."

From the Producer

Garnet red with ruby hues. Intense and clean scents of roses, vanilla, roasted hazelnuts, liquorice, tobacco and cinnamon. Fruity scents of strawberries and mulberries. Full and elegant flavour with a good body. The perfectly blended hints of fruits and wood are extremely appealing.

oft pressing of the hand-harvested grapes with destalking, followed by fermentation in temperature controlled tanks. The skins are macerated for 10 days and the wine is racked when fermentation has been completed. The wine was then put into oak barrels, partly new and partly already used for earlier harvests. Decanted once a year, after 24 months has been assembled in concrete tanks where, after a break of six months or so for a further natural stabilisation before being bottled. Ages in the bottle a further six months before release.

Critic Reviews

The Wine Front

"Mixed berries, cherry, spice, some cedar and hazelnut oak showing, some dried flower perfume. It’s dry and a little grainy with nutty flavour, some clove and toast, and a fairly bright but sooty tannin finish of solid length. Nice wine." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

95Points
The Real Review

"It’s a modern Barolo with classic rose petal varietal character together with vanilla, cedar, spice, blackcurrant and tobacco leaf flavours supported by fine oak and fruit tannins. Surprisingly accessible but with obvious cellaring potential, I felt a tinge of guilt for having opened the bottle so early in the wine’s potentially long life." - Bob Campbell (The Real Review)

    Disappointing

Baffled by the superlatives in the description of this one. Sorry to report I found none of the magic I associate with Barolo. I gave up on it and opened something else.
