About The Wine

A new chapter here in the remarkable story of legendary Barossa Valley winemaker John Duval.

For this special, limited release wine, we thought we'd leave it to John to explain:

"We have long had in mind the idea to produce a Cabernet Shiraz blend as our contribution to the proud and distinctly Australian tradition of blending these two varieties. An age worthy wine that would reward extended cellaring, allowing its journey of evolution to be enjoyed over many years. A wine from special Barossa vineyards, and produced only when the right vintage conditions prevailed. Our patience has been rewarded, and we are proud to announce the first release of Integro – meaning to make whole – from the 2017 vintage."

A collector's item here and a stunning Barossa red set to live for decades.

About John Duval

John Duval is an international winemaking legend, and one of our country's bonafide wine superstars. For 29 years he was a winemaker (16 years as chief) at Barossa Valley winery Penfolds, and was responsible during that time for putting together Grange and his signature wine, the RWT.

For the last decade plus, Duval has spent his time traversing the globe, making high-quality wines in Europe, the North-West of the USA and even Chile. But his love remains the Barossa Valley, with his private label wines representing a chance to try some stunning wines at very reasonable prices.

Now with his own label (established in 2003) in full-flight and his son Tim stepping into the family business, John's legacy as one of the Barossa Valley's finest winemakers of his generation continues to grow.

Additional Info

From the Producer

Since establishing John Duval Wines in 2003, John has always had in mind the idea to produce a Cabernet Shiraz blend as his family’s contribution to the proud and distinctly Australian tradition of blending these two varieties. An age-worthy wine that would reward extended cellaring, allowing its journey of evolution to be enjoyed over many years. A wine from special Barossa vineyards, and produced only when the right vintage conditions prevailed.

In 2017 John Duval Wines was presented with a stunning parcel of fruit from the historic Stonegarden Vineyard, located to the east of Springton in the Eden Valley. First planted in 1858, this vineyard is home to some of the oldest surviving vines in the world and in recent years has produced a string of award-winning wines – including Annexus Grenache. Dry grown and at around 400m altitude, this very special site produces low yields of small berries of intense flavour, displaying excellent balance, elegance and classic Cabernet characters which became the core of this first Integro release.

The Cabernet was matured in French oak hogsheads for 18 months before blending with a small parcel of exceptional 2017 Barossa Valley Shiraz (10%) to balance the palate and produce a complete wine; hence the name Integro – meaning to make whole – was assigned to this special wine.

Whilst true to the John Duval style of elegance and structure, and approachable as a young wine, Integro is designed to reward extended bottle maturation. We sense the wine will enter its peak drinking window around 15 years from vintage, but like all great Cabernet Sauvignon, the opportunity for ageing is considerably longer.

Halliday Wine Companion

2020 Top 100 - "A full-bodied wine of ultimate coherence and quality, the bouquet setting the signal for the palate to follow. Attention to detail is obvious, especially the handling of tannins and oak. The integration of these components with the blackcurrant fruit is faultless." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

"A new blend of 90% cabernet sauvignon and 10% shiraz that offers a very fresh, vivid and intense impression that leads with blueberries and blackcurrants, as well as violets, dark stones, graphite, pepper and earthy elements. The palate has attractive freshness and lively fruit with intense, ripe blueberries, black cherries, blackberries and more. Smoothly composed, long and even. This has a very succulent, long and rich finish. Dense, long and well composed. Drink or hold." - Nick Stock (JamesSuckling.com)

Forget the Grange

This wine is a winner. Forget the Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz or indeed the Grange as this a full-bodied wine of utmost coherence and quality with an impressive bouquet which sets the right message for the palate. I love the tannins and oak treatment and the integration of blackcurrant and blueberry fruits. Talk about intense. Whilst a blend of 90% cabernet sauvignon and 10% shiraz the pepper characters surprise. The finish is outstanding giving a long and rich aftertaste.

Are there volume discounts? No, our pricing is designed to be the best in market already - no marking up and then discounting down! For very large orders (weddings, etc) we are open to negotiating though. Just give us a call.

Do we price match? Yes, within reason. Everyday low & consistent pricing is something we strongly believe in. We want our customers to feel confident they are always getting the best price. If you see a price lower somewhere else let us know and we'll consider matching it. We'll even retrospectively issue you store credit if you have already purchased from us but you see a lower price somewhere later on. Our price match policy can be seen here.

Can coupons and discounts be stacked? No, only one discount or coupon can be applied to an order at once.

I am trying to add more of a wine to my cart but it won’t let me? This means we are running low on stock of that wine. So for example, if the website will only allow you to add 3 bottles and no more, then that is all we have of that particular wine. The good news is we may be able to order more for you. Just contact us on 1300 668 385 or hello@differentdrop.com and we'll organise the additional quantity for you.

Does Different Drop have a physical store? No. Just an a warehouse/office. We occasionally do events however, so sign up to our newsletter or follow us on instagram to stay in the loop.

Can I special order a wine you do not sell? If it’s doable, then we’ll make it happen. Just contact us directly via phone, chat or email and we’ll find out for you right away. Please note that in most cases special orders such as these will need to be in full case lots (6 or 12 bottles).
