About

About The Wine

John Duval Wines is a range that exudes nothing but class and you wouldn't expect anything less from this icon of the Australian wine industry.

His Annexus label showcases the very best of what the Barossa can do. These wines show an unwavering commitment to quality. The ancient Barossan vines that contribute to this wine are all 100+ years old, only the best parcels of fruit are selected and there is no stone left unturned in the winemaking.

Few make a varietal bottling of Mataro that shows this sort of depth, density and structure. It's dark, inky and concentrated and surely one of the best examples of the variety you will in this country.

About John Duval

John Duval is an international winemaking legend, and one of our country's bonafide wine superstars. For 29 years he was a winemaker (16 years as chief) at Barossa Valley winery Penfolds, and was responsible during that time for putting together Grange and his signature wine, the RWT.

For the last decade plus, Duval has spent his time traversing the globe, making high-quality wines in Europe, the North-West of the USA and even Chile. But his love remains the Barossa Valley, with his private label wines representing a chance to try some stunning wines at very reasonable prices.

Now with his own label (established in 2003) in full-flight and his son Tim stepping into the family business, John's legacy as one of the Barossa Valley's finest winemakers of his generation continues to grow.

The Wine Front

"This looked slightly ‘lesser’ when I first tasted it and so I went away for an hour or more. Zen and the Art of Wine Reviewing. It’s a wine with crusty earth characters flying around a core of leathery, redcurrant-like fruit. It has refreshing-but-balanced acidity and an even glide of fine-grained tannin. Given time to breathe its quality becomes clear. There’s a wet red rose/violet aspect to this wine too. It’s quite beautiful. Frankly it’s hard to find a wine from this producer which isn’t." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Halliday Wine Companion

"The inaugural release, open-fermented and matured in French hogsheads (25% new) for 12 months. It's a fool's errand to nominate a drink-to date for this wine! Mataro is a notable age-worthy variety, and one made from low yielding 100+yo vines by a red wine master maker who held responsibility for making Grange for many years. The colour is beautiful, a deep, vibrant crimson, the bouquet complex and rich, the palate with layer upon layer of mainly black fruits that keep their feet on the throat of any tannins daring to make centre stage." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)
