About The Wine
Cepparello is milestone wine in Italian vinous history. Conceived by Paolo Di Marchi in the late 1970s, and initial vintage coming from 1980, this was the first major Chianti wine to be 100% Sangiovese. So of course it couldn't be called Chianti and it still isn't! It's Toscana IGT.
The Sangiovese comes from vineyards in the northern part of Chianti Classico, and is aged in french oak for almost two years. It is fresh, bright, quite polished wine, not a rustic, raffia-clad Chianti of old.
Finesse and grace in Sangiovese is what they aim for. It is full-bodied and concentrated but velvet to the touch and with a lovely flow and rhythm. Great for the cellar of course but entirely enjoyable right now.
About Isole e Olena
The De Marchi family, of Piemonte extraction, moved south to Tuscany in the 1950s to purchase two neighbouring wine estates in the hamlets of Isole and Olena - and the joint estate of Isole e Olena was born.
They are located in the heart of the Chianti Classico region, an appellation the De Marchis helped create - they are regarded as true pioneers of the region, and one of the architects of its global success.
Current winemaker Paolo De Marchi entered the business in 1976 and is still the man in charge. His main innovation, the 100% Sangiovese Cepparello, was one of the first great Tuscan wines outside the main appellation regulations, and is one of Italy's great red wines. The estate also produces superb value Chianti Classico, as well as intriguing. Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.
