Super drinking. It lures you in and then keeps you entertained.

About The Wine

Winemaker Jonny Hughes has a great way with Riesling.

For the Hughes & Hughes Riesling, a small portion was fermented in barrel and the juice was left on lees for two months before going to bottle.

There's a smidgen of residual sugar here to retain balance and add body, the finish is a blistering laser beam of purity and refreshment.

This is a great drink and top value in the context of Tasmanian wine.

About Mewstone

Mewstone Wines is a joint venture between Jonny and Matt Hughes, two Tasmanian born wine-heads, and their respective wives Margie and Cathie.

The two families have invested in a small plot of land on the banks of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel in the charmingly named locality of Flowerpot, on the south-eastern tip of Tasmania. Matt works the grapes, Jonny makes the wines, taking what he learnt from seven years as assistant winemaker at Moorilla and re-imagining it for his own label.

The Hughes & Hughes wines offer some of the best value to be found in Tasmania at the moment, and the Mewstone premium range focuses on exception single-vineyard wines made in a style that Jonny wants to drink.

James Halliday called them, "an utterly exceptional wine producer". Keep an eye on this ambitious pair as their star continues to rise.

Additional Info

From The Producer

Fruit was sourced from the Coal River Valley and the Derwent Valley. The blend is made up of 95% tank fermented GHM yeast, and 5% barrel fermented natural yeast. The primary ferment long and cool and was stopped when balance was achieved. It was held on lees for two months post ferment and bottled on the 21st July.

The finished wine has cracking acidity that is balanced by 7 grams of residual sugar. There’s citrus and white florals bursting out. The residual sugar allows the palate to begin with fruit and transition to a dry finish. The time on lees has added weight and rounded the wine out. A limited volume of only 2508 bottles were produced without fining.

Critic Reviews

The Wine Front

"It feels soft in the mouth and yet the intensity of flavour is excellent. Lime juice, steel, perhaps some lychee, spice too. Orange blossom. Deceptively complex; it creeps up on you. Super drinking. It lures you in and then keeps you entertained." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Halliday Wine Companion

"The grapes are from the Coal River and Derwent Valleys. A flowery citrus and honeysuckle bouquet paves the way for a riesling of authority, resting easy on its laurels thanks to its inherent length and clarity of varietal expression. Like all the Mewstone wines, it is neither fined nor filtered." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)
