About The Wine

Made by the formidable Alex Head from a barrel declssification of some of his best wines, the Grenache fruit comes from an assortment of vineyards planted in the Barossa as far back as 1942.

The portion of Mourvedre is from Seppeltsfield and the Shiraz from one of his favourite vineyards in Krondorf.

In this compact, delightful little wine you reap the benefits of decades worth of viticulture and a mastercraftsman winemaker. For the price, there are few wines in the Barossa that can hold a candle to this little number.

A brilliant value and amazingly versitile modern Australian Red wine.

About Head Wines

Alex Head has had what you might call a meteoric rise through the Australian wine industry. In his short career as a producer he has been heralded as one of the best Young Gun Winemakers, not only in the Barossa but the whole country.

With no formal training as a winemaker, the purity and balance inherent in the wines are amazing.

Alex has a passion for the old vineyards that populate the Barossa. With a keen eye for a good site, Alex has put together a formidable portfolio of vineyards which produce simply outstanding renditions of Shiraz and Grenache year-in, year-out.

These are some of the most exciting wines in the Barossa.

Critic Reviews

DDS review

"Burgundy Red. Medium bodied with light extract. Spiced red fruit nose with cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry. The palate has red fruits, musk sticks, candied orange rind with Grenache's trademark warmth, volume and presence. Sweet tannins are spicy, fresh and chewy" - Head Wines

Additional Info

From The Producer

This is the second style of wine to be produced under the ‘HEAD RED’ range and like the ‘HEAD RED’ Shiraz is essentially a barrel de-classification.

Always picked on the cusp of ripeness with some whole-bunches retained for the fermentation which is more of an infusion than an extraction. Grenache is sourced from Barossa 'Old Vine' and 'Survivor Vine' vineyards in: Light Pass (1968), Greenock (1962), Williamstown (1968) and Krondorf (1942).

The Mourvedre component comes from Seppeltsfield and the Shiraz from Krondorf. Matured for one year in old 500L puncheons. Bottled without filtration or fining.

For immediate drinking and can be chilled lightly.
