About

About the Wine

A 'true' Pinot Gris in that the natural copper pink skin of the grape coming into the wine itself through some extended skin contact.

Wild-fermented to complete dryness, this is a slightly skinsy, textural wine with heaps of bounce and flavour, the quince/ poached pear spectrum.

Some time in French oak adds richness and structure to an intriguing release.

About Hans Herzog

With over 500 years of winemaking history in his family, Swiss winemaker Hans Herzog picked up his life in Zurich wine country, and with his wife Therese, headed for New Zealand. In 1994, they established one of the most stunning vineyards in the heart of the Marlborough region, planting an astonishing 29 varieties on their small patch of land.

They tend the vineyard with immense love and care. Everything is grown organically. Hans crafts premium, idiosyncratic wines that show the beauty of his vineyard in every glass and shares these wines with every person who comes to dine at their fine estate.

As The Wine Front's Gary Walsh once noted, there's "Never a dull moment when you open a wine from Hans Herzog."

From the Producer

A long extended cold soak on the skin extracted the superb flavours and brilliant pink colour. I then let the must progress to its natural (wild yeast) fermentation without any residual sugar. 20% of the wine went into French oak puncheons and its fine lees regular stirred assisting to its remarkable silkiness, complexity and depth.

This wine has not been exposed to cold stabilization and fining with only a light filtration to retain the elusive aromas. Natural sediments may show and are testimony of this high quality wine. Perfect in taste, naturally.

The Wine Advocate

Swiss-born Hans Herzog's Old World-style wines, made from his 26 organically farmed grape varieties, sing of both the land and the man. Ultralow yields and long skin contact make this amber wine—the color of a flaming, pink-tinted sunset—extraordinarily unique in New Zealand. The evocative nose smells like a summer evening: grilled nectarines and figs, honeysuckle, beeswax and warm stones. It's gorgeously complex and mineral, with layers of flavor and texture. The alcohol is a touch high, but overall it pulses with energy, unfurling over time and proving Pinot Gris capable of greatness Down Under. Drink now–2030. - Christina Pickard (Wine Enthusiast)

The Real Review

Orange-tinted wine from a lengthy period in contact with the skins. Dry, flavoursome pinot gris with quince, cherry, anise, spice and floral characters. An intriguing wine with a peppery tannic texture that gives support without pain. I am not a great fan of many 'orange' wines but I do like this example. Fabulous

For better or worse, we drank a bottle of this wine over 2 days and it was simply magnificent. Both days. Talk about method written into experience and flavour! From the first drop to the last, a complex, sophisticated and expansive wine. Fabulous.
