2017 Forlorn Hope Songs from Mars SG

Barossa Valley, SA

Devastatingly delicious and incredibly rare, the first Barossa Shiraz Grenache from Matthew Rorick is a smash hit.

I wanted the SG to be connected to the Barossa, but in the style I like.

Matthew Rorick, Winemaker

About The Wine

The wines from the hands of Matthew Rorick have a V8 engine in a sports car frame.

His first foray into the world of Barossa Valley reds has produced a red wine of raw magnetism. A classic blend of Shiraz and Grenache from old dry-grown vines, this is the essence of the Barossa Valley mainlined through one of the USA's cult winemaking stars.

There's a deftness to the wine. Deep pools of quintessentially Barossan fruit with an energy that tugs you back to the glass.

Only 60 dozen were made. The asking price is ludicrous. Jump quick if you want to catch this rare bird before it flies the coup.

About Forlorn Hope

Matthew Rorick is one of California's rockabilly winemaking superstars.

His love for the unloved and obscure varieties dotted around his homeland combined with his stripped-back, bare-knuckle winemaking style have seen his small batches of 'Rare Creatures' develop a feverish cult following in the US of A.

In 2017 Rorick dropped into the Barossa Valley to catch up with friend and colleague Jaysen Collins (Massena Wines). Some sexy old-vine fruit made itself available. Rorick couldn't resist the chance to make a couple of wines from this alien patch of earth. And so, Songs From Mars was born.

A palpable driving energy pulses through the veins of both the white and the red release. A ludicrously small production of both make these indeed rare birds of a different feather.

They will be gone before you know it.

Critic Reviews

DDS review

One sniff and your head snaps back. Seductive red fruits, choc-dipped cherries, a lift of something almost like traditional Turkish delight. There's some meat and dried herbs in the mix to. Such a wonderful thing to sit and sniff. The palate is cool and soft. Clarity and precision. White pepper lift. Killer. All the generosity of the Barossa nursed into a fine frame. Red and black fruit. Dark chocolate. It's all good. It's all very, very good. - Different Drop Wine Team
