About The Wine

The Magnolia vineyard forms the backbone of the excellent Eperosa range made by Barossa born-and-bred, Brett Grocke.

Originally planted back in 1896, Magnolia is an imporant site in the history of the Barossa Valley. This single block wine celebrates these original plantings.

Each vine is tended by hand, each berry meticulously selected for the blend. Once you taste the finished product, you'll see it was well worth the painstaking process. Grocke says, "The combination of organic farming and 121 year old vines has resulted in a wine of brilliant fruit purity, depth and complexity."

This is Barossa Shiraz in full robe. It's rich, concentrated and epic in volume.

About Eperosa

Eperosa is Brett Grocke's heart and soul.

Grocke is a fifth generation born and raised Barossa viticulturalist/winemaker. Eperosa is the vessel through which he tells the stories of the small patches of the Barossa which he has cared for his whole life. He works with long-established vineyards planted on ancient soils and channels the regional warmth, richness and power of the Barossa with a deft artist's touch.

These wines are honest, robust and made with minimal intervention. A true representation of the modern Barossa with old vines and a rich family heritage as the backdrop.

Grocke's star is on the rise, being named James Halliday's Winemaker of the Year for 2021.

From The Producer

The Magnolia 1896 Shiraz is sourced from the oldest vines on our Magnolia Road vineyard planted in 1896. The vines grow on deep granitic sand over clay soils at an elevation of 315 metres. The block is run organically using only organic fertilisers and fungicides and the weeds controlled by sheep, mowing and mechanical knifing. The vines are detailed rod and spur pruned and shoot and bunch thinned to control yield and quality. All the fruit is handpicked and hand sorted prior to open fermentation and after 15 months the wine was gently hand racked from barrel with no fining or filtration. The combination of organic farming and 121 year old vines has resulted in a wine of brilliant fruit purity, depth and complexity.

The Wine Front

"The vines are pruned by hand, shoot and bunch thinning also by hand. The grapes are hand-picked and sorted, 1265 bottles made. Terrific colour clarity; the wine is full-bodied yet balanced to the point of elegance, with blackberry fruit trellised on ripe tannins. Why so cheap?" - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

    Very good quality wine

I can tell it’s a very good quality wine, although I have to admit that it is not my preferred style of Shiraz from the Barossa Valley. Maybe it’s just too young. It’s very complex, herbaceous. Will give it another go in a few years’ time.
