2017 Domaine de Fa Saint-Amour

Beaujolais, France

A top cuveé for those enjoy the finer side of Beaujolais. This is a stunning, ethereal expression of a high altitude site.

About The Wine

The Graillot family, one of the most recognisable names in the Rhone Valley, love them some Beaujolais.

After years of drinking and swapping their wares with some of the best producers in Beaujolais, the Graillots sought out some land in the area bordering Juliénas and overlooking the town of Saint-Amour.  Alain's son, Antoine, spearheads their Beaujolais project, making the wines in a traditional way, using 100% whole bunches and semi-carbonic maceration to attain a classic sense of the region in each glass.

The Saint Amour is the Cru offering from the Côte de Besset area. A vineyard that sits up at 450m ASL, this is the lightest, most ethereal Gamay from the Graillot family.

It's fragrant, delicate and shows a fine filigree of tannin.

It's an intoxitcating red which should be enjoyed from a large Burgundy balloon for maximum pleasure.

Additional Info

From The Producer

Certified organic (biodynamic farming). The Domaine’s Saint-Amour is bottled from a single hectare of 40-plus-year-old vines within the hillside climat of Côte de Besset, in the northernmost section of the appellation bordering Juliénas.

This high, steep vineyard, one of the very highest in Beaujolais, is composed of crushed granite and sand, peppered by big chunks of granite rock, and lies on the east-facing slope of the Cru. Unlike other climats of Saint-Amour, Côte de Besset has a fairly low percentage of sand in its soil.

The locals say this anomaly generally results in wines with more finesse and elegance than power. Combine this with the altitude and you start to get an insight into the terroir. This is oh-so fine. Expect raspberry, dark cherry and pastille aromas and flavours as well as plenty of iodine-like minerality, very fine tannins and the kind of finesse and perfume that deserves a Burgundy glass! Lovely, lovely wine.

Critic Reviews

"Lurid magenta. Intensely perfumed cherry and dark berry aromas are sharpened by suggestions of smoky minerals and cracked pepper. In a weighty but energetic style, offering sharply defined blueberry and bitter cherry flavors that firm up slowly and turn spicier on the back half. Supple tannins lend shape to the finish, which hangs on with impressive, floral-tinged persistence." - Josh Raynolds (Vinous)
