A beautiful interpretation...

About The Wine

This is one of the country's premier Viogniers from one of the country's premier producers.

Where the Nouveau Viognier from Clonakilla is all about showcasing the freshness and drinkability of Viognier, this iteration is about power and complexity.

This is matured in French oak to enhance the luscious, decadent shape that the best Viogniers can take. A spine of crunchy acidity here the key to keeping this wine from falling into a caricature of itself.

An outstanding wine and a touchstone for quality Viognier in Australia.

About Clonakilla

Clonakilla is one of the true icons of the Australian wine scene. Since its inception, it has been one of the leading lights of the Australian cool climate wine insurgence.

They boast one of the most collectable wines in the country in their Shiraz Viognier, a wine of outstanding quality and consistancy over the last two decades.

Whether Shiraz, Riesling or otherwise, every wine in the Clonakilla stable are considered amongst the benchmark examples in Canberra District.

Quite simply, Tim Kirk and his family-owned estate are one of the true gems in the Australian wine industry crown.

Halliday Wine Companion

"A beautiful interpretation that stakes its claim first with aromatics and then a tightly woven palate. A touch of honeysuckle, melon with creamed honey and a fleck of spice. The palate is textural but not weighty, with lemony freshness and terrific length." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

The Wine Front

"This and Yalumba Virgilius sit together on the throne of Australian viognier. The throne might be in a lonely, empty castle perhaps, but it’s still a throne. Regardless, a high quality wine this typically is. There’s some of the flirty lushness that turns on (and off) many people about viognier, apricot, coconut, quince, but the wine is much tighter and minerally than you’d expect. Then again, Clonakilla viognier is so often a precise, well formed and shaped wine. It’s bulbous up front then finishes chiseled, flinty and chalky, texture is indeed one of the highlights of this excellent wine. A great release once more." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Additional Info

From The Producer

The 2017 vintage was built on the wettest Winter/early Spring that any of us can remember, followed by a beautiful warm late summer and early autumn. We picked generous crops of perfectly ripened grapes.

The Viognier is typically generous with ripe stone-fruit, musk and ginger aromas and the classic flavour packed palate. Delicious on release but will age with interest for 5 to 10 years.
