About the Wine

This textural feast of a wine from Glenn James and Jo Marsh is named after Peter Taurian, the man who brought Friulano to the Tamar Valley and supplied the delectable fruit for this offering.

The pristine grapes from Tassie, with a tiny touch of both Riesling and Chardonnay, see 200 days of skin contact, which transforms them into an aromatic and complex wine.

Think lemons with herbs and pepper, a savoury and grippy finish that's sure to please all skin contact fans. Stellar stuff.

About Billy Button

Billy Button is the charming Alpine Valleys based project of ubertalented winemaker Jo Marsh, now helped by her winemaker husband Glenn James and young winemaker Alex Phillips.

Billy Button focuses primarily on producing small batches of alternative varieties from good local growers in their small patch of Victoria. The team explores varieties that are rarely seen in the Australian landscape - you can find anything from Schioppettino to Verduzzo in this eclectic range.

Jo's gentle touch in the winery makes for beautifully balanced wines that show great texture and vibrancy. The Billy Button range is a little gem of North East Victoria. It's one of the more unique wine ranges in the country and the perfect place to begin your exploration of alternative varieties.

From the Producer

Peter Taurian was born in Friuli and worked his first vintage with his father in 1944 as a 17 year old. Emigrating to Australia after the war he worked in many different regions before settling at Rosevears in the Tamar Valley of Tasmania. He planted a vineyard to predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but sought out some Friulano rootlings to plant a few rows of his beloved variety. The first fruit from these vines were handpicked by Glenn James and his wife Jo Marsh in 2016.

Fermentation occurs using only the ‘indigenous’ yeast from the vineyard’s own terroir. Once fermentation is complete Pandora is then sealed up and her precious contents matured on the skins and seeds for around 200 days. All the flavours and many other grape derived compounds produced by the vines each season in the presence of fermentation lees (yeast and malolactic bacteria) are slowly extracted and transformed during this period to produce an aromatic, complex and textured white wine.

"Same vinification as the '16 - 200 days on skins and so forth - but with other varieties included friulano 66%, riesling 22% and 12% chardonnay, all from the Tamar Valley. This is a thrilling wine. Pale-straw with excellent clarity; it's heady with fennel and white pepper, preserved lemons and a savouriness that's hard to pinpoint. Very complex yet moreish with perfectly poised phenolics that add to the shape and feel of this wine. Bravo." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)
